I know that everyone is waiting for Windows Phone 10, but I actually like 8.1. I like the built in apps, I really don't see anything so horrible about the system apps that I would need an upgrade. I have the Lumia 635, and yes, it does "resume" here and there, but nothing like Android.

Having said all of that, can I expect WP 10 to run slower, since it is an upgrade, and will that sacrifice in performance be worth the extra features, or should I leave well enough alone when WP 10 comes out. I have come to embrace the idiosyncrasies of WP, so what I can I really expect from WP 10 other than a complete version of Office, which is something I would rather run on a tablet or PC.

There is NO reason you NEED to take the impending (probably a year away) update.

Other than apps incorporating features of Windows 10, you could happily stay on Windows Phone 8.1 - but as I said, you have ~~ a year before faced with that decision.

As MDK22 said, you don't have to update if you don't want to. Updates are always optional. However, if you are the type of phoneuser that sticks with one phone for many years, you might want to update to ensure your app support is continued. Of course it takes a long time after release of Win 10 before the dev support for 8.1 is depreciated, but that is a downside for long-run-users.

In your case, the (probably) only reason you might consider taking the update, is IF Microsoft includes some killer feature in Windows 10 (e.g. exploding Tiles). A lot can change in the next 10 - 12 months.

    Universal Apps.

It will make the integration of accounts, saved settings and data so much better. It will also open up a lot more Apps to your phone.

I'll install it based on what I've already read. I expect improvements in both features and performance, as I've had with any prior update from Microsoft. If I hear otherwise (beyond these forums) following the official release on the 1020, I'll pass on the first version because I'm also satisfied with 8.1. What I won't do is install any beta or developer version of any kind -regardless of any hype or praise. I've resisted such versions in the past and avoided many reported problems.

I wonder more on whether Microsoft will entice/reward me with a device/camera better (but not bigger) than my 1020, with which I'm also pleased.

In general any update from Microsoft usually is worth the upgrade (even Windows 8). I look forward to W10Phone

When I updated from ice cream sandwich to jelly bean, it completely screwed up my android and it was buggy from then on. I'm hoping that an update to Windows 10 would be smoother. However, all the updates so far, while small, have been great.

If the layout of Settings is more logical, that's reason enough to upgrade. At the moment, Settings is highly disorganised and clumsy.

Universal apps is a promise that has yet to be realised.

I used to share your fears about updates. I remember the apprehension I felt on the release of Mango and the relief I felt when it turned out that Mango was even smoother than Portico. Since then I've always looked forward to updates.

That was slightly spoiled with 8.1 update 1, which doesn't seem as responsive, at least on my Lumia 930, but I'm still eager for Windows 10. I think overall, Microsoft have done an exceptional job with Windows Phone and there is little to fear. I expect the UI to be a logical progression from what we have and the WP team to have the OS properly optimised by the time we get it.

As for positive reasons to upgrade, well we're just not in a position to make that decision, but Windows 10 is what Microsoft have been working towards for years now: a unified operating system across platforms such that you'll have a digital life less compromised by the devices you're using to access it. There's also Gemini to look forward to, so the full Office experience will available on the phones without compromise.

One of the reasons I went with Windows Phone was this promise for the future, which neither Apple or Google seem have an equivalent of. Google may develop things more quickly, but I don't think they have a coherent plan and that Windows 10 will put Microsoft ahead for a long time.

You don't have to upgrade if everything running the way you want them
I for one can't wait for the new OS update I bought my phone and I'm expecting a lot of future updates

Somehow I feel that Windows 10 will be the tipping point where, you could continue what you were doing, but if you want to be modern, like the rest of us, then upgrade. Sort of like what ICS and Jellybean did to Gingerbread on Android, and now the same thing is happening to those versions of Android, through KitKat and Lollipop.

It reminds me of iOS 7. There were plenty of improvements; clearly iOS 6 was in the dark ages and the Windows XP of that ecosystem. But the end result is that iOS 7 slowed down iPhone 4x, so it was a compromise.

Don't get me wrong, I have my phone set to update automatically and I'll take my chances. I'm just curious as to what the differences in performance will be.

You will update, because one can not stop this uncontrollable march of technological progression. Eventually all will succumb to it's power and in the end those left behind will be considered as social outcasts. The social pressure will ultimately triumph (just being somewhat dramatic)

It will be not quite a year before the thing (first version) comes out. Plus how long will it take for it to be pushed to all the different types of phones. To be happy, worried, or whatever about it now is a total waste of time. Enjoy 8.1 (which many phones don't have all the upgrades yet). I am beginning to believe we are the source of many problems that don't exist or matter. These are phones people (powerfull phones); but still phones. They will not make or break out lives. Enjoy them and quit worrying or predicting things we have little or no control over.

I can understand your worry. I used to love updates, read all the hype and got sucked in. But 8.1 and Cyan have been a retrograde step on my phone (1020), slower, buggier, battery issues, camera quality has gone downhill. I just think that the 1020 won't handle W10 very well.

Edited to add, sorry, I'm moaning about a 1020 on the 635 section, I was just reading 'most recent' posts and didn't notice the category.

If you are happy with what you have right now, there is no need for you to upgrade. But if you change your mind, you can upgrade. Ultimately You have the choice.. that's what's important.
