I had a L635 GO phone and it was updated to 8.10.14219.341 but I bricked it going to Windows 10 preview. I got a replacement of the same phone and it won't update past 8.10.12397.895 So what can I do to get it updated to the current OS version supported by the device?

When did your phone receive this update? How long before installing the Windows 10 Insider Preview?

I can't remember when exactly but within the past month or two. I had been on 10 preview before and reverted back using the recovery tool. The phone went through a number of updates afterwards and stopped at 8.10.14219.341 and now my new phone won't update past 8.10.12397.895

AT&T still hasn't released the update for Update 1, Denim, or Update 2 for the GoPhone 635. If you wish to have 8.10.14219.341, that is the version you would get if you enroll in the Developer Preview. Just install that, then you can update back to that point.

That update isn't available for your phone. You probably got it when you jumped onto the Insider Preview, as it automatically brings your phone up to the latest version of Windows Phone 8.1. You can get back to that point by getting back onto the Insider Preview or joining the Developer's Preview.

Please move this issue to another thread, as it doesn't have anything to do with this thread. If I'm on, I'll try and help you with your issue.

For what it's worth, if you are using an AT&T GoPhone you could technically flash the 8.1, Update 2 software that was released for the post-paid variant. Now, will this have any negative effect on your GoPhone 635? To date I honestly cannot say I have had any issues. The base build of your software will match up to the Lumia 635 post-paid but the Windows Phone Recovery tool will always recognize your device as the GoPhone variant. So, you won't be able to use the Recovery tool to restore your phone. Is this bad? For me, I can just use the Lumia Flash Tools suite of apps and the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK Lite to get my phone back to the original 8.1 Update 2 base that I flashed.

Just throwing my two cents in there.

Also FWIW (not much), today marks one month since ATT released GDR2/Denim for the non-GoPhone 635s.
We return you now to your regularly scheduled program.

Just finished a chat with ATT support. Asked the 635 GoPhone 8.1 GDR2 update question. Verbatim answer follows:

Yes we'll be pushing it out to the 635 GoPhone as well. It'll take some time since we push it out in batches (so we don't overload the server), but you'll definitely get it!

Yay! We should get it by the time everyone else is getting 10! Yeah, uhm... this is why I unbranded my phone and am no longer dependent on AT&T for an update. ;) Loving GDR2 on my GoPhone 635 :D

    I guess I'm confused!

In reviewing Microsoft info from the phone (by selecting (Cyan in Extra's + Info), the 635 on AT&T is supposed to be able to receive the update to Denim. I have an unlocked AT&T Nokia 635 on AT&T paying a normal monthly fee, not Go Phone. I received some update about a week ago, thought it was going to be Denim, but it was some stability type update as indicated. When I check Extra's + Info, Cyan is still listed.

Now I know I can install the Win Preview Program update to go to Win 10 and the first update will be Denim, then the other updates, but I was hoping to get it naturally from AT&T.

Any detailed suggestions on best way to proceed.

Please provide the SKU for your 635. The number can be found on the box the phone came in.

    HI Dave,

Unfortunately I don't have the box the phone came in to view the SKU number. Was looking for it last night.

Anything else or way to check?

Just discovered this: (first power down phone)

Pop the cover off and the SKU can be found on a sticker along with other #s.

You have a GoPhone. It has not been updated to GDR2/Denim yet. I say "yet" because ATT support told me that these 635s will get the update, but they didn't say when.

So that's why this 635 model comes unlocked because it is a GoPhone, yet the instructions pointed out to insert your previous SIM if you have one into the phone and not initiate a new account?
Where can one find the list that shows a phone as locked/unlocked, etc.?

The "Code" you have listed is for the AT&T Prepaid ROM - which translates to a GoPhone. It is likely not unlocked, but because GoPhone is AT&Ts brand, the SIM cards can be swapped without it complaining.

I am also a post-paid customer with a GoPhone, and opted to install the Post-Paid ROM instead - as that has GDR2 and Denim - and have not looked back...it is working great so far. I am not convinced that AT&T will be updating the GoPhone in a reasonable amount of time, so figured there was no harm at this point....

Also, FYI, the developer update/W10 preview DOES NOT get you a "real" Denim build, and was problematic for me..better to not get stuck in this "limbo" state, IMO....

Thought this update would be helpful for forum members on this thread about Nokia Lumia 635:
Why wont' my 635 update to the latest OS version

I contacted AT&T. Was on phone with rep in US for 1 1/2 hours. He was in the process of running a test, got disconnected. So I called back. A different rep answered. She advised me that their Clarify and Intelligence systems were down. Apparently these are the internal names for their systems to track and to research issues across the network for the multitude of phones they have to support.

It was 3 AM EDT on Sunday at this point. So there was not much she could do, but to let the next rep when I call back to check these systems cause they were down for maintenance.

Called on Sunday around 2 PM. Another rep answered and couldn't find any info in the system. Wanted to know what was so important about Denim and didn't I get the update already. Told her this update has been released by MS for over 8 months now to AT&T and some have received it on their Lumia 635 circa June 2015, but others like myself have not. She didn't seem to be familiar all that much with Windows Lumia phones, which had me concerned. LOnce I explained the names, Lollipop for Android, she got the message, ha! ha!

She looked in the system, asked me a few more questions, had me take the battery out to check for a white strip that detects water damage. Then called me back.

At that time she advised me that based on her documentation, the only way to resolve the problem with the OS Version I have which is 8.1012397.895 (confirmed by the other rep as not being the latest), would be to replace the phone.

The other rep was going to see if he could find a way to push this OS Version out to me so that I would be on the correct OS Version and then receive the Denim update OTA (wireless). Really nice guy!

Well since my phone is still under warranty, she indicated they are sending me a new phone this week and I can return the current one I have with the box they will provide. That phone since it new, should have the latest OS Version, firmware and Denim update etc., but if not, then it should download automatically.

I will see in a few days. Had the phone been out of warranty, I don't know what they would have attempted, but I think the answer would have been - "Sorry, nothing we can do".

Just wanted to post my finding here so far to the others.

Will post again once I get the new phone to see what transpires.
The carriers just make this impossible.

I can only imagine what would have happened with the millions upon millions of iPhones that are out there, it Apple wasn't able to get all those phones firmware updates and security updates when needed. It would have been a total disaster for AT&T. I'm sure Apple would have taken the matter in their own hands, whether the carriers liked it or not.

Can't wait till Microsoft take a solid grip on the updates for their phones like they do for their operating systems. Maybe the new Surface Phones next year will allow the updates directly from MS, just like Windows 10 updates, since all their devices will be running on Windows 10 - one platform for all.
