I spent some time in the T-Mobile store today. I compared the 8X and the 810 to my 920 and was surprised at how impressed I was with the 810. The device felt high quality without being to heavy. The screens black levels and colors topped the 8X, even with a lower resolution. In fact, aside from the resolution, I prefered it my 920's display. The styling of the device was also great, way better (subjectively) than the 820 that AT&T offers.

If I was on T-Mobile, I would choose the 810. If it was on AT&T I might have considered it over my 920.

black levels, contrast and color reproduction have absolutely nothing to do with screen resolution... zero, nada, zilch. The differences you whitnessed are the result of using entirely different panel technologies:
920, 8x = LCD
810 = AMOLED

I know that. I'm saying that I'd take the lower resolution of the 810's display over the washed out 8X display and it competes well with the 920 display.

Appreciate the perspective. I too understand the differences between the screens ;) and also really like the colors of the AMOLED screen on the 810. I also agree, the styling of the device is great. Other than the lack of low light sensitivity, its not too far off from your 920. Anyway, again - appreciate the perspective. It helps us on T-mobile who don't have the option of the 920!

I was dead set on getting the 8x on T-Mobile as an upgrade to my HD7. I really wanted to get a new phone with a 720p resolution. After seeing the 810 in the store i'm now thinking of getting it instead. I really like the shape of it and the screen is gorgeous.

The line: "...even with a lower resolution" suggests you think resolution and black levels are somehow related. Sorry 'bout that. Anyway, I also prefer the 810's and 820's screen to both the 8x and the 920, but I've always been a sucker for high contrast and inky blacks. Although for an LCD display, the 920's black levels are pretty amazing too.
