This is an old problem discussed in great detail in other threads in this Lumia 822 forum. You will only be able to send SMS once you toggle your connection to 2G this is due to the radio frequencies difference between VZW and TMO/MetroPCS.

Supposedly I saw a review of 8.1 on the 822 and it said that it fixed the texting issues with T-Mo (parent company of Metro).

If I were you, I'd download the Preview for Developers apps and install 8.1 and see if that helps fix things.

What?! I updated and still receive the same problem, with sometimes an occasional text sending through. I am on WP 8.1 DP.

Which firmware are you running? I don't have the 822 (yet, I want to test it), but the user above says that after upgrading to Black, from Amber, they no longer have issues with missed or delayed texts.

it seems that you are not using your device on verizon therefore you are not getting 4g. By the way E stands for edge. that's 2g
