Lumia 830 no 3G speeds on Straight Talk (AT&T)

Hoping someone might have some insight...

Problem: New Lumia 830 only gets 2G speeds on Straight Talk AT&T network.
Hardware: Factory unlocked Lumia 830 RM-1049 variant
Troubleshooting so far: Verified that phone has proper frequencies. Verified good provisioning and 3G service coverage with Straight Talk (I understand that there is no LTE with this phone). Verified accurate network settings (Set to 4G highest connection, tfdata APN settings [accurate data settings supplied automatically by sim]). Reset phone.

I am guessing that there is some kind of defect with the phone, but just want to be sure I'm not missing something before I toss a phone I otherwise like.

Back when I had an 830 on AT&T I had trouble with my phone not connecting at anything other than LTE. RumoredNow helped me out in that thread and maybe there's something there that can help you out as well. Take a look.

Following up...was able to get my hands on an RM-984 variant, and everything worked as expected with no issues. My conclusion is that I had a bum phone for the first one.
