Camera focus with zoom

I've read all the pros and cons regarding the camera on this phone and find the camera useable but not great. However the one place where I have had issues is with the zoom. When the still camera zooms in, the image is out of focus. I've tried all the different focus settings with no change. When you take the shot, you can see the camera do the auto focus and it pops into focus for a split second then takes the image with the out of focus setting.

Is this something others have seen? Do I have a unique problem? Is it a hardware issue with my specific phone?
