I saw a mention that WalMart was selling the 920 for $49.99 so I found the online only ad and went to best buy where without hassle they matched the price and I now have the matte black version with 30 to exchange for another color when they arrive. No plate but the money saved pays for that and best buys insurance has $0 deductible so win win for me.

And end up paying roughly $1,000 more for the phone after your 2 year contract is up than you would have if you bought it off contract for full price and went with an MVNO like StraightTalk, Red Pocket, or MVNO...

That really depends.

I just bought 2 Lumia 920's for $99 each and renewed my 2-year contract for each phone. Both Lumia 920's are only costing me $35 each per month (part of a family plan) with unlimited data. The total 2 year price for me is going to be $940 per phone. I cannot get a better deal off contract, not that I could figure out anyway.
