Look at it this way. It behaves like the gas gauge in our cars: Fill it up and it seems to stay on full for a while, and then it starts to drop a bit. Once you get below 50% (half tank), it really plummets.

It's only ever accurate when its totally full, or totally empty.

My N900 has a charge meter chip...TI BQ27200. Fairly sophisticated bit of kit that's a good deal more accurate and complex than the scenario you describe. I'm sure there's something similar in the 920 and you're likely completely wrong.
