Not connected (red) whatsapp connection issues

After years of IOS and Android, owning multiple devices and having enjoyed Whatsapp on these multiple platforms I was very excited to see the recent whatsapp updates. BUT, I was wondering if I am the only one who has this issue, but when I start up whatsapp the connection profile is often set to 'not connected' , I miss out on a lot of notifications which do not even show up on the live tile. But when I restart my phone and open whatsapp it does connect. Has anybody else had issues with the not connected profile status and found some handy tricks to get around it?
