Lumia 925 - BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH - Totally bricked within a week :/

another "happy" customer here with the second Lumia 925 that lasted less that a month. I just spoke with a customer support rep who acted as if he has never heard of such an issue. After trying to walk me through the Hard Reset and then Master Reset (makes me wonder how many resets they have) he told me to send the phone in. It wouldn't have been such an issue if it didn't take 2 weeks to get a replacement.

When my previous phone bricked out I tried to get a replacement at the local t-mo store but the best they could do, since I didn't buy insurance from them, was to charge me $20 for the "warranty exchange" which from what I understood means that they would simply send the phone to Nokia.

Does anyone know if this happens to 1020? I'm thinking of selling my replacement phone and buying either an unlocked 1020 or an iPhone. at least iPhone can be replaced much quicker at a store.

PS: I asked to talk to a supervisor, still waiting for a call back...

Another unhappy customer here. My 2 week old 925 was just completely bricked this morning, was fully charged the evening before, and now, without any warning or indications, it just bricked itself. Have tried reset instructions in the thread, no response.

Was able to use the Nokia Care Suite and a modified Nokia Data Package Manager that allowed me to download the right package to recover my phone. So happy I got my phone back! :D

Good Morning Musicman247,

Can you give me a few more details on how you were able to recover your 925? I'm trying but Nokia Care Suite keeps bombing out saying it can't load a dll when it attempts to recover the phone.

This just happened to me, my L925 was about 6 weeks old. It was working fine, set it down for 5 minutes, and it wouldn't power on. Soft reset went to a blue screen, and hard reset went to "Windows can't start" boot screen, with something about needing the install media. It's now on its way to Nokia, but if someone knows of a way to recover, could they please share the steps here with the needed packages? It seems that it isn't so rare.

I was going to pick up a 925 just to play with on the weekends and to have the camera. This thread has changed my desire to get this phone. Something is going on with this model. I will wait to see how this is handled.

I doubt it is going to be handled at all. When my second 925 self-bricked I called support and asked to speak to the manager just to try to return it for a refund. The manager was "too busy" and the rep talked me into "escalating" my issue. He promised that this way I don't have to wait on the phone and someone would call me right back. A couple of days later I got a call from some wannabe hypnotherapist who claimed to be with Nokia customer support. Our conversation went like this

-- can I return my phone for a refund or exchange it for another model?
-- no can do, sorry. our technician will fix your phone and send it back to you in no time. 99% of our customers are satisfied with our service...
-- from my experience, that is less than a month old, it takes two weeks to
-- 99% of our customers are very satisfied with Nokia customer care
-- I don't care about the 99%, all I care about is that I paid a sizable chunk of money for a phone that has to go to the service center every 3 weeks
-- that's a unique issue. our specialist will take care of it and you'll never have this issue again.
-- how is that a unique issue if I experienced it twice already in less that two months. If you type "Nokia 925" in the search box at forums.wpcentral.com the third most topic that comes up is about this very "unique issue"
-- you can't believe everything you read online...
-- can I believe my eyes?
-- 99% of our customers are satisfied... and so will you... once our technician takes a look...
-- but what about all those complaints at wpcentral, some of them...

10 days after sending my second 925 back to Nokia the repair status on their support site has changed to "Returned".


I was going to pick up a 925 just to play with on the weekends and to have the camera. This thread has changed my desire to get this phone. Something is going on with this model. I will wait to see how this is handled.

I tried Nokia Care Suite, it doesn't see the phone. perhaps the secret is in the "modified Nokia Data Package Manager", whatever that is.

Maybe try using nokia software updater. you can connect the device to a computer and flash it to the latest firmware. I would try it but my 3rd 925 was replaced already. here is a link to getting it Nokia Software Updater 4.1.0

Hey everyone, I read everyone's posts last night because my phone bricked. There were many tears and sacrifices made to the gods, to no effect. A soft reset led to a blue screen. A hard reset led to a Boot Manager that others have encountered, asking for a disc. Lolwut?

But this gentleman/woman, quoted above, presented the only solution that worked easily. I went to the website, downloaded the software, and installed it. Once it installed, and I opened it, it searched for a device. I plugged in my 925 via USB and it slowly but surely recognized the phone (even when the laptop itself did not recognize it) and stated that it could install the latest firmware after downloading it (about 1.35 GB). The download took a bit of time, during which my phone shut off and restarted to the Boot Manager, shut off and restarted, shut off and restarted. This may create an issue for others, because once the update is downloaded, and your phone is doing this, the update will fail. Instead, you have to click "Try Again" or whatever similar button there is after unplugging your phone. It will search for a device again. Wait until the phone is blacked out again, then plug it in. It will be recognized, and the update will install before it has an opportunity to shut itself off again. It will recover your phone to factory settings. It is a wonder to behold.

Apologies for the flair contained in this message, I was up past 4am my time figuring this out, and I have now awoken with a working phone and am happy (for now...)

Good luck, everyone else. If you get the Boot Manager screen, the method outlined here, including the above link, worked. At least for me. I'll keep tabs on this forum (I'm not a regular user, just found it while searching for solutions) in case anyone has any questions I may be able to answer.

A few weeks ago I had to soft reset my 925 and that worked. However today it bricked with the blue screen sometime during lunch today and won't boot at all. I use this phone as my BYOD work phone replacing a BlackBerry so I'll have to go by T-Mobile after work to see if I can get a replacement. It's disappointing because I really like the device and I see the potential of WP. So far what is being said about 8.1 looks promising and I hope to keep this platform because with Office and Exchange integration this is a good work phone. Unfortunately reading the above messages on this thread these hardware issues are not what I expected from Nokia and hopefully this is not a major issue.

Hi WeirderHealer,

Try what I did in the post above yours. I'm a T-Mobile guy on my family plan, and I had to have my 925 replaced a month ago for a speaker issue. I was worried they'd try to charge me or something to replace the bricked blue screen 925 I have now, or leave me without a phone while it was repaired/replaced. The Nokia updater in my post above yours did work, and is relatively straight forward if you want to get it up and going now.

Let me know how it goes.

I went to T-Mobile last night and they are shipping a replacement phone. The guy didn't even try to look at mine after I told him it didn't boot. I might try your fix if I don't have a replacement by Friday.

How long did you have your phone? I've had mine for about three months and I was told I had to ship mine back to Nokia.

Just waiting for it to come back now. :-(

Nearly 30 days. I was told if it fails 3 times, you can pick a different phone. I hope it doesn't come to that because the 925 is a nice design and the camera is very good. Much better than my HTC One's. HTC Zoe is pretty cool though but this is the wrong thread for that! :wink:

I have had this phone for about 1 week. I haven't dropped it and nothing out of the ordinary has happened to it but it decided to just totally stop working on me. When I attempt to turn it on, it just goes to a solid blue screen for about 30 seconds before turning off again. Charging it just repeats this process as long as it's plugged in. Pretty bummed. Off to the T-Mobile store I go to get a replacement!

has anyone else had this problem?

Well I am on 925 #2 and the same issue again. After a few days with the replacement, I had to perform a soft reset and I was worried the same issue would happen again where it will not boot and yep it did again. This time I tried the factory reset but it only boots to the Windows Boot Manager screen after the Nokia splash screen. I did try the Nokia Care Suite but in this condition, the phone is not recognized. So again, I will have to go back to T-Mobile for a replacement.

Unfortunately, I am afraid my experiment with WP8 may be done. I don't have faith that a 3rd replacement 925 will be any different. This is a work phone (BYOD) and I need to depend on a reliable phone with good battery life. I was hoping this was going to be the best device but now I may have to look for something else.

I really want to love this phone. Unfortunately, the 925 just died after an ave of 1 month. So far, I had to exchange the phone 3 times (I had the JUMP plan); each lasts about 30 days. Apparently, T-Mobile won't let you pick a different phone even after 3 failed replacements. When it works, it's really nice but the quality of this particular phone is horrible. Tonight, as I went in for yet another replacement, the store people told me this had happened to a number of their customers..."One guy was on his 4th 925", he said. Highly not recommended!!!
I posted this also on the T-Mobile 925 page to alert others. I want to keep this thread alive so that people know there is a problem with this phone.

Mine crashed too, T-Mobile's 925.

But as I live in Brazil, I had no other option as to flash the system. That fixed it.

My guess, it's just a system-wide crash. What I found to be one of the biggest flaws, is a lack of that loved option on iTunes to recover bricked Apple hardware. Basically, iTunes flash a new system into the hardware.

Both iPhone and Windows phone have extensive backup options. When I flashed it, while setting it up, it showed a backup from one day before, and all my apps, settings, calendar and contacts where automatically installed.
It is pretty lame not to have that recovery option on Windows Phone.
