Yep we were promised 36 months of updates

Wrong. That was a reference to the support lifecycle. That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with updates. It means that MS can/might provide updates during that time, but MS doesn't have to, and MS certainly didn't promise anything of that nature. The only thing MS promises is that they'll have people on hand to answer questions, provided your business has a support contract with them! That the 36 month lifecycle period represents a promise to deliver updates is just misinformation that apparently doesn't want to die. WP 7.8 is also still within its own lifecycle period, until around mid 2014, but how many updates do you think WP 7.8 will get until then? Exactly...

The only thing we know with certainty, is that WP 8.1 will be compatible with all current WP 8.0 handsets. It is expected that every current handset will get that update, but ultimately it depends on OEMs and carriers also doing their part, so it's not guaranteed.
