In the past I chose to buy my own phone for two reasons. I could find a much better phone than at&t's limited selection. And if the phone was a model At&t carried buying it outright gave you the full feature set built into the phone as AT&t commonly crippled many good features to force you to use their options.

Well, you are not correct that Verizon's Icon is not compatible with ATT. To best of my knowledge, the Icon is sold unlocked. From Verizon's specs page:

Network
  • LTE Band 13 & 4;
  • CDMA 850/1900;
  • WCDMA 850/900/ 1900/2100,
  • GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
On WCDMA ATT uses band 2 (1900) and band 5 (850), so this means it will get 3G (or fake US 4G)
On LTE side ATT uses band 2, 4 and 13 which would provide decent LTE coverage, with exception of areas that use band 2
On T-Mobile the Icon would get LTE or 2G (EDGE) speeds.

Having said all of that, personally i would never buy Verizon phone, even if they sell it carrier unlocked with huge discount. They appear to be on completely separate update cycle, so security updates would be rare. People have reported that Verizon have stripped the functionality of WP8 to modify/add apn's. On ATT or T-Mobile MMS would never work, because the MMS apn cannot be added.

I'd love to be able to pick up the 930, but my concern is with the LTE bands that the phone uses and what is available in the States. Looking at the specs-it seems as though the Supported bands are different.

You've got the better version that'll prob be the 935. The Mclaren phone with 3d touch is a high end flagship dropping in November on tmobile, att, and Verizon so... That's closest bet most likely.

just rumors so far... nothing ofically announced till now (except by evleaks ^^)...
but sure devices will become better and better... the question is how long do you want to wait? if the 935 is announced/available, there will be surely rumors about the "better, faster, lighter, thinner" 940... or 1030... or or or...

So, since there was a few posts in the forums about people using a L1520 (Latin american variant I believe) that did get AT&T LTE bands, couldn't we conceivably buy the latin american version of the 930 and achieve that same result? Just a thought...

And if a 935 is announced, it'll probably be available no sooner than 6 months after the announce date :devil:

I was surprised hearing the 930 wasn't coming to the US. I know people say we have the Icon but that's only on Verizon and doesn't achieve LTE on AT&T/T-Mobile. I thought the 930 was going to be the new Flagship for AT&T especially since Windows Phone for them hasn't gotten one since the 1520.

The 930 would be able to get 3G but not be able to get LTE on AT&T's network if I'm not mistaken.

The Icon should get 2G and LTE on AT&T's network but not 3G if I'm not mistaken.

Look at my post above, i've explained that already. Icon will get 3G on ATT without problem, but it would not get LTE on ATT in every market because band 13 that Verizon uses is different category than band 13 that ATT uses on LTE. Those ATT markets that use band 2 and band 4 would be fine.

Does anyone know how long Verizon has the Icon exclusive for? When the 920 was first released it was exclusive to at&t for what, the first 6 months before tmo could get it?
I've talked to a few Verizon reps and no one there seems to know anything about it.

Is there any information on which areas use Band 2? Can this be found out easily?

There is one documented difference.
"The 930 for instance, touts the Sensor Core motion processor for tracking steps and movement while sleeping, whereas the Icon and 1520 do not."

Read more: Lumia 930 vs. Lumia 1520 vs. Lumia Icon: Spec Comparison | Digital Trends

SensorCore is purely software, and is available on the Lumias 630, 635, 929, 930 and 1520. The only difference between the 929 and 930 is the colour option and network compatibility.
