I just read this article from Paul and for those of you that don't get his daily issues, I thought it would be good and educational reading. I especially like his reasoning for buying the Lumia 930 and his comment regarding Verizon.

Hopefully this will generate a good response from this site. Remember, he has the ability to have any phone, WP or otherwise and he chose to buy out of his own pocket the 930.

Re: aximtreo,
Thank you. This was a good read. The comments where good too, but a few too many about cameras.
EDIT: ie. "Readers" comments.

I think he was just making a point that he wants, needs, has to have a good camera. In his choice of the 930, he tells us he got what he was looking for.

Re: aximtreo,
Hi, I wasn't referring to Paul. I thought his writing was spot on. I was referring to the many many readers comments. Too many about camera, in my opinion. I guess it is a popular topic.

I will look at the 930 in the Spring time. Microsoft is release a "Bling" Gold version of the 930 for worldwide distribution at the end of January(U.S. excluded). It trim in gold on the edge and lettering. Available in White and Black.

I'm due to upgrade from a 920 in a couple of weeks and, due to the lack of anything new, I've been considering a 930.
The fact the phone has been around since mid-2014 has put me off a bit but this article has pretty much swayed me into going for it.

All I see is a mix of readily available facts mixed with self important opinions presented in the same arrogant drivel he spews most days. I am sorry but I see nothing of interest at all since I don't find his pathological need to see his name in print particularly useful. Are people here that desperate for a cheerleader? You really do not need anyone to affirm your chooses for you.

As for he can buy any phone, I am pretty sure that technically applies to everyone choosing to buy a phone anywhere. It also, however, a way of boasting he has more money in his pocket. I am sorry but that is, as often as not, the real point of such a comment. On the subject of the 930 and Icon being identical, that simply is not true. The Icon is based on the 930 but it was designed for different network technology. With respect to the obscenity he tosses at VZW for not updating the Icon that is just closed minded BS since he never chooses to discuss why it has not been updated nor why it was pulled. The fact that it was pulled and not updated yet should be a clue to reasonable people that there are problems with the handset. BTW, his own carrier also doesn't merit an obscenity even though they haven't seen a supposed flagship since 2013. News flash to everyone: any exclusive for the Icon is long past so it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out AT&T has chosen not to pick up the 930.

Some may like Thurott. I have no objection to that since we are all entitled to an opinion. I find the guy to be an often intolerable self ascribed expert who has never gotten over Microsoft cutting him off back in the Windows Vista/7 development days. He has (as usual) also not provided anymore information than anyone can get anywhere. Please point out one thing other than the attitude and innuendo in the piece that couldn't be gotten from a Google or Bing search. It is just an opinion piece. BTW, as a business person who travels and who works with others who do the same (plus various feds) I can assure you most people I know would either start laughing or stop reading upon reaching the comments about LTE not being important. Good for him that he can live with a much slower connection - I don't know a single person who a) wouldn't notice the difference or b) be willing to take that step backwards.

Nice article... Now, if I could find a good deal on a flagship phone that would work fully on T-Mobile, I'd jump in and play with this OS. ;) Unfortunately, most of these 'unlocked' phones will have 1 or 2 frequencies they won't match up on (like not working on 3G for T-Mo)

I took the step backwards and yes, I can definitely tell a difference between 3G/HSPA+ and LTE. I just couldn't wait any longer for Tmob to maybe pick up a non-budget phone.

Aren't most tech blogs (or any news articles for that matter) filled with "readily available facts"? True, the facts are available but people may be interested in the perspective of someone who uses lots of different devices over time, and not just for a few days or a week. And he goes back and tries stuff over again to see if things have improved or not. Sorry you don't like his writing style or sense of humor. Should he be always equivocating, or is it okay to project some confidence in one's beliefs?

As for a "pathological need", the guy is a writer. He gets paid to write. His livelihood is dependent upon publishing articles that people read. Evidently his preferred form is short-medium length pieces written at a brisk pace. Perhaps that is too much for you. Don't read it.

As for he can buy any phone, I am pretty sure that technically applies to everyone choosing to buy a phone anywhere. It also, however, a way of boasting he has more money in his pocket. I am sorry but that is, as often as not, the real point of such a comment.
If you've read/listened to his stuff over the years, you know that he does more than most tech bloggers to focus on entry-level and mid-tier products. If you're familiar with his periodic "What I Use" columns, you'll see he in fact tends to keep gear for a while and appears reasonably thrifty for someone that reviews technology products for a living. He does not go in for tech-spec-porn, and explicitly addresses the issues of "value" and "good enough" computing. Unlike many tech bloggers, he will actually use and think about lower-end devices. He doesn't dismiss them out of hand because they don't have the latest and greatest specs. He praised the 520 to the high heavens as the best value of the year. Nor does he seem to have any problem calling out bad products. Go look at his pieces on the 530.

If you're not opposed to the 6" Lumia 1520, the unlocked RM-938 will work fully on T-Mobile for you.

So...... how do you REALLY feel?

I find most of his stuff insightful and self aware. He makes fun of himself way more than he puts himself on a pedestal. He has broken a good amount of MS news, has a good pulse for the company, and admits when he is wrong.

I do agree with one of your points though, without question: No WP device is worth giving up data speeds. Period. AT&T LTE is really showing some nice speeds these days. Not a chance I would go back to the fast snail data speed for a great device when I can get a couple of good devices that are on an LTE connection. More power to him, but I would never recommend it to anyone, and would sure object.

The irony is I bought the 1520.3 (RM-938) precisely because I didn't think I could give up LTE. Well, of course, I had it for two months, and I only like the phone... I don't love it. The tap/swipe bug and the sheer size drive me bonkers. So on a whim, I forced the phone to 3G mode to shut off LTE and strictly use HSPA+ mode.

And what do you know? Things were great. I mean, I still had the same two gripes as above, but performance was shockingly the same for me... just a little slower on big downloads. But I can stream audio/video just fine. Signal quality is still the same. Even with "2-3 bars" I'm seeing speeds in the 3.5Mbps/Down and 1.5Mbps/Up ranges, which isn't too shabby at all. On full bars, I get closer to 8/Down, 3/Up. I can live with that just fine, tyvm.

So what did I do? I picked up the 930 Unlocked, and now I'm thinking-- wow, I should have just done this in the first place!
