On the Verizon site, the only windows phones that support the Advanced Calling 1.0 (or Verizon branded VoLTE) are the Lumia 735 and the LG Lancet.

Um ... what? Is there a technical reason why the Icon (or even the HTC One and Samsung ATIV SE) does not support this? They seem to be technically superior devices to those mid range phones that do support the feature.

The Lumia 928 was XLTE certified from the get-go. It was one of the first phones to be XLTE-Ready. Verizon has to allow it on their network but I guess they forgot. Probably the same with the 735 and Icon. FYI - many Androids are sold with new-tech-ready features for Verizon that are never allowed or active. Verizon has a reputation.
