I am so sick and tired of these "horror" movies that are full of gore, profanity and glorified torture! There is nothing scary about a deranged criminal running lose and killing a bunch of high, lust-crazy young adults... if I wanted to see that, I'd just watch the news. -_-

What ever happened to things that go bump in the night? When a guy hears strange noises in his house? Where'd the apparitions go? Why is it that EVERY horror movie contains nothing but gross, wretched and disgusting gore? Do these directors even try anymore?

And, for the record, no, this isn't by far the only gripe I have about the genre I used to love. But, for the sake of decency, someone PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one whose sick of this! Let this be the thread for all your horror movie gripes.

As a horror fan I feel your plight. But I have to disagree with you about there not being anything scary about a guy killing high sex crazed teens. One of the scariest films of all time is just that, and subsequently has not one ounce of gore in it. That would be Halloween. But I get ya for the most part. The first Saw and Hostel were good, because they were the first. But the torture porn sub-genre is getting old.

I've seen Halloween, and I gotta admit it wasn't bad at all. But for me it wasn't scary because of the killer or his victims. It was the way he showed up behind you after you thought you outran him, the way he hid in your car or in your house, the darkness, the music, etc.

But since he's just a regular killer (theoretically; the guy survives some unbelievable stuff), then you can just go in and fight him, just like his sister did. I think its much scarier when the object of fear is something you can't just kill on your own.

I know what you mean. I found it scary tho, for the suspense. But a good ghost story is awesome too. Or even a good monster movie is good, too. They're hard to find but they're out there. I browse Netflix and just play random movies. Some are garbage but you find some gems in there. My all time fave is a combination slasher/ghost/monster movie...A Nightmare on Elm Street (the original). I can make a list of some good indie horror flix I found on Netflix if you want.

I agree that new horror movies just rely on gore and other visual effects to scare the audience. I think it has more to do with the mindset of teens these days - they would probably think horror movies of the past are boring because their is no gore, maiming etc.

The best horror movies are the ones that create suspense through the story and atmosphere.

You have a pretty good head on your shoulders sir! And I agree, the suspense of a slasher movie can be pretty creepy if done right.

I guess I'll keep searching for those horror gems. I'd like to see that list lol. :)

The reason for the change in horror is box office. Today's audience wants over the top blood and guts. They want super fast jump cuts and a dizzying score. My 21 year old sister in law swears that the original Omen was the worst and most boring thing ever! Every now and then a quality movie gets through. A few years ago Insidious managed to create a great mood. The same director has a new one coming out too. Suspiria is still my number 1!
