Honestly, I think it's easier as a single male to make friends than it is for a couple at our age with no kids. Also, being in the field you are I think meeting people is a lot easier. I find the field I am in doesn't have a great social aspect to it, or maybe I don't go out of my way to get into it. I don't know. I just find a lot of people here (and in Australia as well) tend to socialise with people they already know from when they were younger. I find it more here than Australia but it was similar there.
I don't know. I think it's hard to meet people outside the lab. And the people at the lab often have already established friendships. At least that's how I feel it feels for the people from abroad in our lab. I think if I'd go to an English speaking country, I would at least not have the language barrier, that would certainly help.

I can understand that it is hard for you to meet new people. Maybe you should take up a hobby, aren't all the Brits into bird watching? ...yes, I know, I'm not helping ;-)

I'm sure you'll be fine. You're a pretty active person so I think you'd find a few friends fairly easy. Lots of people are into running. That's always a good start. :)

I like birds and all but I don't like them that much. :P

Part of the issue I always have is that I'm not into sports. I'm not a gammer either, which is a big thing here. My wife and I have decided we're going to try to do more cultural things this year. It's a bit more difficult being out of London but we're going to give it a shot. :) We're not big drinkers either so that sometimes can be a bit of a barrier. Drinking and socializing is a big thing in most countries.

I like databases, quite a bit. I've even setup one or two. They're very handy. I was just saying that they're only as good as the person who set them up. I've run into ones where they were poorly setup and caused nothing but headaches.

I live in an old apartment (ca 1946). i don't have water saving shower head as a result. I still prefer a short shower (about 10 minutes). If I want to relax, I'll take a bath.

If you like snow and cold, please come to Cleveland, OH. We are getting really cold weather and snow now.

The gas companies in the UK are EVIL!!!!

They keep rising the prices when they got a large profit and they raised it again this winter!

I only like snow if I'm taking pictures. It is pretty to look at. I stopped liking it otherwise once I had to drive in it.

Here's something interesting for you, in Australia a 10 minute shower is considered long. Since there's a big water conservation thing in Australia they actually have a shower timer, they say you shouldn't take more than 4 minutes for a shower, preferably less.

I get a discount on my gas bill, since there is a community aggregation here. I belong to it, and it provides a discount rate on gas.

Wow! That's shorter than what is permitted by the US military (and the military is not known for allowing conveniences to its personnel).

Water conservation is a big thing in Australia. Thing is, not many people care about it. Especially foreigners not brought up in Australia. Then they whinge when there's a drought.

Reality is, Australia can barely support the population it has currently, it's only going to get worse if it continues to grow. It's just not a country for a large population. Thing is, it's going to cost Australians more and more money just to simply live. Unfortunately people who live there don't see the dangers creeping up on them. I think one day in the near future it's just going to go 'poof' and then there will be chaos down there.
