I keep forgetting how young you are. I was just about to ask if you've been sleeping under a rock or something.

Thing is, they have the second amendment wrong. But I'm not going there.

There's a lot of messed up people in the US. People with guns continue to kill people but its never the easy access to guns that's the problem.

I guess not watching the news or reading anything outside my comfort or interest zone does put a damper on what I know outside of cali.

im not going to lie.... that's all I was getting at. its one scary place for extremist right sided wing, looks like tomorrow im going to watch the extremist left sided wing just to keep things even

Proper terminology is 'extreme right wing' and 'extreme left wing'. :p Adding 'sided' is a bit confusing.

Not sure what documentary you would watch for extreme left wing though... The far left can be a kooky but far from being aggressive, though the extreme environmentalist can be one aspect of the extreme left but hardly violent. Please don't go calling communism or Marxism extreme left. They could be considered extreme socialist ideas which the 'left' can agree with but I don't know if I would call them the corner stone of left thinking.

Damn, I'm trying to freeze some bacterial strains. It's actually very easy, but I've labeled my tubes wrongly for the second time now.

I feel stupid.

We all have those moments... I could tell you mine if it would make you feel better. :p

I'll say this: some teachers may be walking around with unprocessed baggage that shows up in the violation of the power dynamic between teacher and student.

I don't disagree with that statement. I don't personally believe it's always a clear cut thing however. I can easily see how these things happen in the circumstances they do. That's where having regular updates about ethics and having a debriefing outlet would be very beneficial. I kind of doubt many teachers in this situation go out of their way to have this sort of thing happen. I know the famous Police song 'Don't Stand so Close to Me' touches on this subject and it's been a 'taboo' subject for many years. I guess the thing to keep in mind is that sometimes teachers are not much older than the students they teach.

I'm sure all of us at some point in life had a crush on an older person whether it be teacher or otherwise.

Taking a modern adult vs child view point however, one must always say that the teacher should know better and should deal with the situation in an more adult manner. The line is obvious in these cases. That's the more troubling aspect of it all.

What is the purpose of freezing the bacterial strains? Just curious :)

It's for long term storage.

When they are in a liquid culture you have to work immediately with them, for some applications you can them keep on ice for a few hours, but that's about it. On agar plates you can keep them up to a month, depending on the strain and the antibiotic resistance. However if you want to store them for months or years, you keep them in a freezer at -80?C.

You can then just take a tooth-pick, scratch a little bit off the frozen surface and streak it out on another agar plate, and they'll happily grow again.

You can do something similar with cell cultures, but that's much more complex and you freeze them in liquid nitrogen or in the gaseous phase of liquid nitrogen.

These Cortana threads become really laborious to read.

Reminds me of the movie Her.

I just avoid the whole Cortana thing. I don't use it. It doesn't really work where I live currently. At this stage it's just a glorified search with a small bit of personality.

Exactly. I don't want to talk to my phone.

I have never seen anybody using such a feature in Switzerland. And here we have a big problem anyway: Most Swiss people feel uncomfortable to speak the "high German" which such devices understand. It's not a problem, it feels just strange. And the Swiss dialects are so variable and different from region to region, I don't see any device understanding this in the next years. And nobody would care to work on that, the market is just too small.

I'd like to have features like Quiet Hours though ;-)

I've come to the conclusion that I dread the day we 'talk' to our phones like in Star Trek. I don't see it happening any time soon but I'm sure some revel in the idea of it. I may have seen one person in public use Google Now or Siri by talking to it. It's more rare than common. Most people are happy to do it in their homes but not while out and about. I think most of us like our privacy. :p

Training has gone to ****s in many lines of work these days, especially some educational and human service areas. One of things that was told to me that professional boundaries is absolutely essential to maintain in order to do any type of human service job. I work with many vulnerable patients daily, most are female, some are highly attractive and quite used to getting male attention in a very sexualized manner. Come summer we see patients dress all sorts of ways in clinic and you cannot even bat an eye at what you see. I've seen coworkers cross the line and get hammered for it. Fortunately, no patient has tried to flirt with me in an overt way so far. I make it clear it is about the service they need, not me. It happens to my female coworkers all the time and they shut that stuff down very quickly.

Some of the teachers I see in these articles are in their early stages of their career. Some of the veterans get caught by it too. While I agree that it is about ethics and training, it has to be addressed in such a way that teachers and human service professionals are reminded that self care is a necessary part of the work.

What bothers me most about these articles is the gender piece. If it a woman teacher taking advantage of a (in most cases male) student, the student is lauded for his prowess. Many of these incidents start before consensual age for sex because it is done systematically and over time.
