Re: WPC 50K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

so then what is the point of getting a PhD?

PhD is your first step in the area of research. It's whole purpose is to set you up to continue to do more research. Though PhDs exist in many subject areas it's usually an academic qualification used mostly in universities.

Majority of people with PhDs do research in academics typically at universities. It's a paid position because you typically work on a research project that's been approved with grant funding. Your research can either be one that is predefined or it can be one that is chosen by you.

People do PhDs for various reasons usually it's because they enjoy research.

Here I am an official employer of the university. So my financial situation is clear and save. I have no idea how the money from my grant goes to the university and I don't care :)

You do a research project to get your PhD. If you ever heard the titles of some research projects you'd be amazed. Depending on what your plans are you typically do new research after you finish your PhD to carry on in your profession.

Your PhD is very defined in a specific topic. It typically has a set length of time to be done in. The US is different than the EU is it's length.

and once that person is done with that research they have to pick a topic in that area? for example a person with a PhD in biology they have to stick with biology?

People will hire you for a certain task or to solve a certain problem. If you have the skills you can apply for every area of research. But usually you don't have them. Sometimes you can acquire them though.

Typically people stick to their topic. You become a specialist in that topic. You don't usually jump from biology to physics for example.

Because we don't have the skills. It happens quite often the other way around, for example in structural biology.

You can have multiple PhDs but typically you don't because it's a lot of study. Majority of people stick to one subject. Also, it's usually very specific too. There are many areas in all disciplines.

oh I know people stick with that topic, but I was referring to if you wanted to change you can change
