Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

There's a new lady who started here at work recently and she seems cool. Maybe that's why I am a little more talkative with her, which is weird for me because I'm so quiet and I don't say much. It could also be because she seems friendly too.

I guess it helps that we aren't that far apart in age too, considering that I am the youngest staff member at work. I'm the baby, haha.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

On the work note, I have never really said what I do.

I am a library services specialist that works behind the scenes in an academic library. I'm aiming to go to library school (grad school) but I don't know what area I want to be in, exactly.

My career is libraries, really. It's not common but it fits so well for me. Not sure what else I would be doing if I wasn't here. Probably something administrative.

Tomorrow, I'm supposed to go bridesmaid dress shopping with her friends. I'm okay with it but I need to confirm with my sister if it's still happening or not, considering other things going on in her life right now.

I worked in a library part-time from 1985-1992, while I was in high school and college. I really enjoyed working at the library.

Good luck with that! I hope the dresses that are chosen will be nice.

My uncle who passed away last year was one of the first to get a PhD in library science back in the day (that too in my home country). He helped start a library science department at the University where he found employment after graduating. He would come visit often (my dad was his favorite brother-in-law) when he was in town for work and usually he would be meeting with people from book companies and book distributors. So of course he would bring lots and lots of books for me as presents. I grew up reading books from so many different genres that were mainstream here in USA at that time but not common back home. This I believe is one of the main reasons for inspiring me to become a voracious reader. I also think this helped me assimilate here in USA since I was so familiar with the norms/culture.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories!

I used to teach chemistry to children and teens at a community science center during the late 80s and early 90s. I was inspired by my chemistry tutor (the teacher I had in school was utterly clueless) who also happened to be an engineering professor. I guess I followed him as far as my career choice was concerned. Oh and I taught chemistry to engineering and pre-medical students at my graduate school as well. That was a lot of fun too.

Ooh let us know how that goes.

Well test driving the phone was fun. It is a superbly crafted device, feels awesome in hand for such a large phone and the screen is just gorgeous. The screen protector on the other hand started to lift up because of the case. I think I just have to get used to using this device without a screen protector. I like it and can see why people bought this in droves last year. I would argue it has a better feel in the hand than the regular S7 which I kept for about 4 weeks last year.

A side corollary to the story. The library science department is now named after him at that University :) And our family sponsored a scholarship in his name to help more folks get interested in pursuing library science as a career choice.

That's amazing on both points! Your uncle must have been a wonderful, hard-working guy. Much props (not that you need them, I'm just saying).

Going against the expected grain feels hard, so I can only imagine how he felt going down that path. I get mixed reactions about wanting to be a librarian (good and bad). Mostly people are like, "Oh you're the only person I know that wants to do that" or they think that I'm foolish because of what they think they know.

I think Library Science has a lot more going to it than just "Oh you're the only person I know that wants to do that", so don't get discouraged by that. Most people do not realize how and why are books categorized/catalogued the way they are. Why is there a numbering system, and how was it designed to help people find books and also for library staff to put them back in the right place, etc. etc.

Thanks for the encouragement. You're so right. Some of the people who tell me that kind of stuff look at the amount of money in it and tell me that it wouldn't be enough.

At the point I am, I have no choice but to get a ML(I)S if I want to advance career wise. I'm okay with that, but I'm working on the steps to get into the program.

I am going to brave the ugly LA traffic today. Have to go to UCLA for a 3PM appointment.
You all have a good weekend.
