Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

On a whim, I pulled a Libra and got a XZ2 Compact. It’s weird to see such good performance from a small phone not named iPhone SE. I’ll be doing updates tonight (still on Oreo and April 18 security patch) and maybe slapping the BlackBerry keyboard and Hub later too. The Swift kb is beyond puny.

Omg congrats! I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Some last minute notes since last time:

1) No complaints with the V35. As much as I loved that no frills feel of the G7, I prefer the V30 design a bit more. Just wished it was the 128 GB model. I would have kept the G7 in spite of the battery issues if it had the US radios. If I had to do it over again I would have bought the V35 on Fi for Black Friday last year, even though it was overpriced.

2) Gear Sport is fine. I like it more than the Gear Watch. Has a nice weight and the rating bezel is as satisfying to use as I thought. Software I'm still indifferent about. The Watch Active is just too small and too much like the Android Wear watches I have. May need to get a replacement though as it looks like I got a lemon.

3) Will likely get a 128 GB Pixel 2 later in the year to collect. I think Google really screwed the pooch by not going with 6GB RAM setup for the Pixel 3, among other things. I would have offered the 3XL with 6/256GB ROM only and the 3 in 6/128 and 6/256 variants. That way you can sell the 3A models for 4/64GB, with the size being the difference maker. I'd buy a 2XL over a 3A XL. Somehow I don't think the Pixel 4 will fare better than the 3 this year.

4) Not getting a G8. Of the two LG's for this year, I'd get a V50 before the G8. I just don't believe in paying earlier adopter price for LG's because LG doesn't believe enough in their phones to properly market and software support them.

5) Likely not getting a Nokia 9. Would like to collect one, but as long as I have the G7, I cannot do that.

6) Likely will pass on the XZ3. If Sony disappears from the market I may troll for one to collect. Same goes for Razer, even though if given the chance, I'd trade my G7 for a Razer 2 easily.

Thank you for the updates. It sounds like you found the right fit with the V35. I'm glad that you decided to go for it after all, as it seems like it can have a good balance of updates and cameras.

Ugh that sucks that you'll probably need a replacement. For you, I can get why the Galaxy Watch Active is too small as you do watches with bigger (or "normal") sizes.

I agree, with the Pixel 3a actually becoming a thing, it would be nice to get a Pixel 2 for sure. I don't blame you on passing up the G8 and Nokia 9.

I can get you on the Razer 2, as I saw a recent review about it and how nice of a phone it generally seems to be. I also understand passing on the XZ3. I don't get Sony.

It is really nice to be able to get to this in about an hour drive from home.

For me, I narrowed it down to a few truths for me:

1) If I could only keep three phones, no matter cost...they would be a Mate 20 Pro (just ahead of the Mate RS), LG V50 and a XZ3. I'd actually use the XZ3 as the daily driver, with the V50 for the wired audio duties and back up camera and the Mate 20 Pro as the primary camera. Sony has the best Bluetooth audio of the three, so on days when I don't want to use the wired, I'm OK there. LG's Bluetooth audio is too quiet in terms of volume; paired with the RHAs it's a bad mix of the really clean but too quiet sound for my commute. Plus, I still love the in hand feel of the XZ3. And the single camera is very solid.

2) if I didn't care as much about water resistance, my daily driver would be a dual SIM jade green Mi Mix 3, 256 GB model. Their audio over Bluetooth is solid and their audio over dongle is very, very good. Plus, I would never use the selfie camera, leaving me with all screen all the time. The dual cameras are solid too.

I just would pass on the Nokia 9 and XZ3 as I don't have the extra space where I'm staying or cash to get them. I'd trade my G7+ for one (especially the XZ3) as the backup, but for their current prices I'm not interested. There are better values out now (Mate 20 Pro at the right price). Maybe later in the year, but as of right now - no, barring a trade.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So I think I'm gonna be a dumbass and seriously have 1 phone I like from 2015-2018 and 2 phones I actually use. As an old school enthusiast, I feel I need to own something from Nokia, HTC, Sony, RIM. I kinda liked old school scrappy Samsung too.

Now, if I did this the Qualcomm chip way it would be:

2013: Moto X (SD 4 Pro)
2014: Oneplus One (SD801)
2015: Lumia 950XL (SD810)
2016: HTC 10 (SD820)
2017: Essential phone (SD835)

If I did it how I'd really want:

2013: Lumia 925, Moto X
2014: Oneplus One, Moto Maxx/Moto X 2nd gen, Xperia Z3
2015: LG G4/LG Flex 2, Microsoft Lumia 950XL
2016: Xioami Mi 5, HTC 10, Xiaomi Mi Note 2
2017: Pixel 2, Essential phone, Nokia 8
2018: LG G7, Xperia XZ2.

If I'm taking purely favorites:

2013: Moto X
2014: Xperia Z3
2015: LG G4
2016: Xiaomi Mi 5 (slightly ahead of the Honor 8)
2017: Essential phone

Man, I've used a lot of phones. Sigh.

I have had the fortune of sampling everything on your list except Nokia 8 and Xperia XZ2.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Clue has sampled every single item on your list.

Yeah, I remembered you used a G Flex 2. God, we've used a ton of phones, eh? If I have enough beers in me, I'll dig up the thread I posted here if all the stuff I've sampled over the years. List is a mile long.

Let's do this. Keep in mind, this is from memory so I may be missing a few items. It is also done not in the order of usage. This is the hybrid sample and extended ownership list. No tablets or smartwatches either.

Blackberry (BBOS): 7100T, 8100 Pearl, 8810, Storm 9500, Storm 2 9550, Tour 9630, Bold 9700, Bold 9650, Curve 8900, Curve 8520, Torch 9810

Sony Ericsson: M600, W980, K600, K750, K810, P910, P990, W810, T68, T100

Sony (Windows): Xperia X1

HTC (Windows): HTC Touch, Touch Diamond, Touch Diamond Pro, Kaiser 2, Touch HD

HTC (WP) : Titan, Mozart, 8X, 8S, One M8

HTC (Android): 10, Sensation, Nexus One, G1, G2 Magic, Desire Z, M7

Moto (Android): Moto X, X2, Maxx

Moto (featured): Razr V3

Samsung (featured): SGH-D900

Samsung (Symbian): Innov8

Samsung (WP): Focus S, Ativ S

Essential phone

Oneplus One

Google Pixel 2

Microsoft 950 XL

Nextbit Robin

Apple: iPhone, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 6S

I think Mr. Clue, and 99 are in this ballpark. Heaven knows Bunky passed this years ago. Still, some list...

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Nice list MIA.
The engineer in me has an OCD complex so I will check my spreadsheet next week and I see what I have sampled, what I have used on the spare line ( if there are family photos on cloud from these devices it counts) and what have been the daily drivers.

My sampling rate took off in late 2014 so I won't have that many early devices on the list and no BB devices.

You may have as many because you've tried some wider range of Chinese phones too. I'm curious to see your list.

I know for a fact I’ve forgotten a s**t ton of phones.

Edit - Yep, searching my drawer I found an old iPaq 910c and it reminded me of another WinMo HP h6925, Glisten and h6300. I won’t even try to remember all the PDAs I had, or have, like my Palm T/X.
