How to stop users modifying, renaming or deleting onedrive files

I want to use OneDrive to allow a centrally maintained database of reference documents to be accessed by remote users using Android tablets. However it important that these users cannot modify, rename or delete the documents.

From the testing I have done OneDrive is perfect for this except for the "modify, rename or delete".

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this?

@lauraknotek thank you for that. The docs need to be available offline so I really need to use the OneDrive App. It looks like I may have to use Google Drive.

You can also mark the documents read-only and set file specific permissions.

When you click anyone with the link can edit, you get this:

The last two features are paid features, this test document is on one my other emails not the one with Office 365 (to prevent any confusion or misunderstanding).

For clarification I used a web browser - firefox not the onedrive app.

@TechFreak1 Yes I am aware of these features if I use a browser and link, however they do not work offline. The tablets are used to access operational documents on charter boats that are out of internet range most of the day. They return to port at night and any updates will be automatically synced then. Unfortunately I need to use the app to achieve this.

Ah I see, can't you mark the offline files as read only on a Windows 10 PC and use the Built-in Onedrive client to do the syncing?

The files are maintained on a Windows 10 PC but the remote access is via Android Tablets. The read-only property is not passed to the Android device. I have tried the more sophisticated "Windows Security" but same result.

I see, hmm.. in that case your other solutions would be to try other providers like as you suggest google drive, drop box etc.

Sharepoint will probably be overkill/expensive to set up for what you need.

If you're looking for an android based solution, have you tried Samsung's knox?

We have implemented the solution with Google Drive and it does what we want. We discovered an additional benefit with Google Sheets. The Android Excel app will not run VBA macros but scripts on Google sheets work a treat!
