How does the unlocked phone update process work?

I've been using Windows Phone for over a year now and I've been unable to figure out how the update schedule works for unlocked phones. I was wondering what kind of unlock is needed for a phone to be on the unlocked schedule. My phone is AT&T branded and carrier unlocked so I use it on Rogers in Canada. Would it be possible and if so what would the advantages be of having my phone get the unlocked schedule of updates rather than updates as AT&T releases them?

You unfortunately won't get your updates until at&t puts them out.

Thanks for the prompt response. I am aware that I currently have to wait for AT&T to push updates :/ but I was wondering if it was possible to change that. As I understand it, phones sold unlocked or unbranded do not recieve updates on a carrier schedule. Is there any way I could recieve updates on the same unlocked schedule without having to depend on AT&T?

Unlocked? Still carrier software. Unbranded is the only way.
