Buy vs Free APS

I am a new smart phone user and have many question but the question for this thread is a concern I have about Free APS. As with all things, nothing is FREE and I have found that any FREE ap I download comes with advertisements scrolling across the bottom of the screen. This doesn't bother me but as I was watching the scrolling info change I began to wonder, "Is this AP continously accessing the Internet and using up my 300MB data plan?".

Can anyone answer this question.

If there's an ad, then yes, it is using data. Many (not all) free apps have a paid option that removes the ads if that's important to you.

Thanks thed, it is important to me in that I don't mind spending a dollar or two on an ap I want rather than spending that dollar many times over on data plan over charges. If I had an unlimited data plan it wouldn't matter but I don't.
