How to transfer data to new phone

My wife was having so many issues with her Samsung Focus S that she decided to replace it. One of the problems with the Focus S was that she couldn't sync it with the computer as it wouldn't recognize the device. She'd plug it in and it would say something to the effect of USB not recognized. So with that in mind, is there another way to transfer data from her old Focus S to the new windows 8 phone without using Zune? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not used a WP7 device so I am not familiar with how it does contacts and data, But does it use a Microsoft account like WP8 does? If so it should have your contacts, calendars etc stored in the cloud so when she signs in the WP8 phone it will pull that data down.
