I'm not a developer or programmer so forgive me for my ignorance but if Microsoft can trickle in these updates that we've been seeing with SkyDrive lately, why couldn't they do something like that to fix the "other" debacle and a host of other improvements??

I think the SkyDrive updates are done on the server, not on the phone. The phone is simply reflecting the additional options available, so it's not a 'software update' per se, which the storage changes would be.
