Just asked the ATT Customer Service account on twitter about why they disabled DataSense on the latest GDR2+Amber release for att. they replied with: "@richddr We are currently looking in to this- thanks for your patience while we do so. ^BeccaG 2-10PM CST M-F"

Can we use Nokia Care Suite to load OEM firmware, thus giving us Data Sense?

The 1020 is my first Nokia, so I'm not up to speed on Nokia Care Suite.

No, Data Sense requires the carrier to have back end support for it or it won't function right.

actually i flashed my ATT 920 with the French Amber ROM including Data Sense and its on-par with ATT's View My Data Usage contact.
    Appears to work perfectly.

It doesn't need back end support, that was always a lie. In fact, if you install DS you'll find it already has historic data as it's been recording it all along, it just wouldn't let you access the data before it was permitted. It does not get it from the carrier either, because my carrier doesn't count usage for certain services but of course DS does, so I can clearly see it collects its own data.

The con is revealed. We were lied to. Surprise!

no there is a back end compression server that can be used with data sense to cache and compress websites so you save data. Verizon has this, ATT does not and because they are greedy shysters they probably will never enable this. The data metering part requires no backend support unless you want to reconcile what ATT says you downloaded vs what your phone says.....and yes there CAN be a difference.

And yet if you use a phone from another supplier on a network that doesn't support Data Sense the compression works fine (not surprising, since it just uses an MS proxy server in the same way Opera Mini does).

    Can you explain that?

If you want proof, flash your phone with an unbranded firmware and try it. There is no other way to prove it to you. Not sure what you think I would gain by making it up. Also, not sure what the carrier is supposed to need to do to provide compression. MS run the proxy server so really you need to explain your logic, not me.

Where's the proof that the carrier provides anything other than permission and a money pit?

Actually, I just worked out a way to prove it. My phone still compresses the IE data even when on wifi. Now, I'm damn sure my cable company don't have a special Datasense server, nor my works, nor the pub, nor the cafe, nor the bus company etc.

    Proof enough for you?

    I say again, con.

Could someone please just build a Data Sense app and put it in the store as the carriers have no control over it.

    Problem solved.

I'd build it if I knew how, bet your a**.

    It's very simple:

    1. AT&T does not allow Data Sense

    2. It would cost them nothing to do so.

From 1 & 2, it is evident that they think they can make more money by not allowing data sense. How?

    3. If consumers had data sense they would use it, and possibly remove apps that use too much data, and cut down on data usage in general.

Therefore, AT&T wishes consumers to use more data, either paying ridiculous plan overage fees or pay more for a higher data allowance.

    Was that so hard...?

The only reason the ATT bastards do not provide Data Sense is so they can charge extra subscription charges for their own service that does this.
