It's a combined update. You get all the benefits of GDR plus what Nokia has added.

Black is the Nokia firmware update, Update 3 / GDR3 is the Microsoft hardware update.
They are usually delivered together, in one update.

basically: GDR3 - is a Microsoft update. (Close button on multitask, driving mode, screen rotation lock, etc..)
Black updatde - is a Nokia update that add some NOKIA's exclusive resources on GDR3. (Glance 2.0, Bluetooth LE, etc)

I don't know what five-letter word beginning with "F" you meant to thank Microsoft for not making the tiles too small to tap on devices with smaller-screened devices.

Microsoft's UI guidelines for the OS itself and apps from developers says that objects should be 9x9mm with 2mm spacing between them and that touch targets should be larger in cases of "major error consequences," which launching the wrong app could be (depending on your point of view.) So, the minimum screen width of a device that shows 3 columns of medium tiles would be 64mm (6 small tiles x 9mm + 5 gaps x 2mm).

A screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio (1280x720 or 1920x1080) would need a diagonal measure of 5.1" to meet the 64mm requirement. A screen with a 15:9 aspect ratio (800x480 or 1280x768) would need a diagonal measure of 4.9" to meet the requirement. Microsoft compromised at 5.0", which is only 0.28mm (per small tile) too narrow for a 16:9 device.
