Is there a way to turn off text toast messages or turn off the preview function so the text content doesn't show across the top of the screen?

Check the post below. From what I know and read from some of the post it doesn't look like there is a way disable it at the moment.

The functionality is there now in 8.1, but it doesn't work like other OSes which I think what the guy is asking for - it's actually better than IOS for privacy - you get the tone, then the "balloon" on the bottom and if you want to see who it was and the preview you just swipe down from the top to access the action center. This way neither the sender nor the message text is shown unless you want to see it, but it is at your fingertips. To set it up go to Settings->notifications+actions->messaging->uncheck notification banners. The only thing that kind of stinks is that when you are actually using the phone you don't get them either. But, you can use the action center in the same way. But, it's private ;)

I suppose that is another advantage of using a flip case?
