Why do my apps not auto update?

I noticed that I had to go into an app in the store and click update. There was no notification of a "pending update"... I am new to WP... Do I have something set wrong? Or do I have to keep checking every app in the store to find the one that may have an update?

No, the store kinda lags when it comes to updates. The Store tile should show the number of apps that have updates available but sometimes days have to pass to even find one available. Speaking of automatic updates, that option is not yet available on Windows Phone 8 but the 8.1 update will give you that option.

Is wifi or data off when your phone goes into the lockscreen?
If battery saver is on that could slow things down also.
