Final last words for Windows Phone 8: memories, nostalgia, thank yous, a new chapter awaits!
- With the (rumoured) upcoming release of Windows Phone 8.1 Preview tomorrow,
I nonetheless, am a little bit emotional just thinking about this.
I will remember Windows 8, when it was released in October 2012.
I remember like it was yesterday.
Out of the sea of iPhones and Androids,
there was 1 lonely outsider who used a Windows Phone,
who used a Lumia, an HTC 8x.
Do you remember when you are the only one?
Do you remember when we made discussions, well somewhat sad discussions on why
no one has and no one uses Windows Phones?
It felt pretty lonely.
But I felt very special, because my phone was the subject of curiosity,
people would ask me if this was the Carl Zeiss phone. Lol. Carl Zeiss.
At least the camera made it through words of mouth.
I felt different, I felt proud because i was THE only one I knew
who has the Windows Phone. The Nokia Lumia 920.
I remember, when Windows Phone 8 was first released, and we had discussions
about seeing other Lumias in the wild, just to read the same stories:
"I'm the only one :("
Although as much as I was proud of my 920,
I felt dismayed, and somewhat unsatisfied with my Windows Phone 8.
There was literally no features to be proud of,
Live tiles are good, but 90% of the time they didn't even work. Lol.
No notifications, even some members argued that live tiles are enough.
But clearly it wasn't.
I guess that we are just some of the most passionate fanboys out there
that even with the mishaps and the shortcomings of the best phone OS,
we find reasons to justify them.
Sometimes they would sound stupid,
sometimes they do make sense.
But overall, we had to settle with what we had.
That's not to say we didn't make the most out of the little features we have.
Even with what we have, we were the most resourceful bunch.
We find ways to help ourselves, to help each other out,
to make the early Windows Phone 8 experiences more tolerable,
and more fun to have.
I will close my speech with more of this later, but
let me talk about the forums now.
All the friends I have made, jomarr, Georges, Alex, missy, .aR (they're members of a different forum but we're all Windows Phone fans)
Thank you to all the amazing moderators who made sure the forums are a pleasant place to be in.
All the annoying people too.
Well spaulagain was pretty annoying, because he kept bringing down the idea of a background,
and called me dumb,
and everyone else dumb for agreeing with me.
I get annoyed with him sometimes because he thinks that his views are superior than everyone else's,
and that it should be his opinions that only matter.
But we're getting backgrounds for 8.1! We won the fight!
And I shall put this behind. I have forgiven him.
He does bring really good insights and great points though.
And he can be pretty funny sometimes; he's quite the joker.
I remember when he made some comment "Was she stroking it" and I lol'ed for a good while.
All the agreements, all the disagreements. All the happy moments, all the sad moments.
I remember when Nokia released #ToInstaWithLove, and it started the Instagram revolution, and we did it! We got Instagram!
I remember when we get so excited at every single Instagram related article,
just to leave out sad, disappointed, crushed, even angry that the app is not going to be released, lol.
Well we did it.
I remember when we had no apps, now we do. Our apps are growing day by day.
But we are still lacking in this department. Hopefully the universal apps will be the holy grail
for the future Windows Phone apps.
I remember when we had no market share. We do now.
But it's still a long fight to get where we want to be.
Sometimes I wish that our market share stays the same, because it brings that special feeling
that I am part of the few special people who have Windows Phone.
But what good is it to keep the special feeling if I'm the only one with the WP experience?
I hope we grow more and more!
We're already #2 in many countries, and SHOULD be #2 in the US and Canada, if they just smack
their heads and rethink how they organize this whole carrier exclusivity mess.
But Windows Phone 8 is not without the star developers that contributed to Windows Phone.
Without them, Windows Phone wouldn't be what it is now.
Thank you
RiseUpGames for ProShot, and still continuing to support the best Camera app there is
Thank you Liquid Daffodil for your quirky, and extraordinary apps
Thank you, Skinnery, Wiztiles, for bringing in more colour to our Windows Phone experiences
IT IS because of you, that Microsoft listened, and now giving us backgrounds.
But rest assured that I will still use your apps to customize my screen.
Hell I will use it even more frequently now! I love everything that you have made.
But of course, we have to thank Rudy.
Words can't describe how much you mean to me,
to us,
to Windows Phone 8.
There is so much to thank you for, but it's better for that thank you
to be from my heart, and through spirit.
I hope nothing but more success to you.
Can you hire me? I promise to make you the best coffee everyday!
Lastly, thank you, WPC Editors, for making my day with your latest news,
especially with leaks, updates, and rumours.
Thank you for all the hard work you have done since Windows Phone 7, and Windows Phone 8.
My sexy Daniel Rubino who I proposed marriage to a many billion times, but left me heartbroken every. single. time.
And thank you everyone else.
Here is to me, and to us sticking together, through thin and thick.
Through happiness, and disappointment.
Through success and failure.
We MADE IT!
We are HERE!
We will be THERE!
We can finally say,
"I WAS THERE WHEN IT ALL BEGAN"
And to end this speech.
Here comes to us,
Windows Phone 8.1
The old chapter ends, and the book is not yet closed.
The new chapter awaits,
a new beginning,
a new era is upon us
Windows Phone 8.1 HERE WE COME!

- I think it'll get plenty of attention, and it's probably more suited to this forum, since it is about WP8.

- Windows 8 I waited so long for you. I put off owning a smartphone, waiting for the day you would arrive. I had sampled plenty of smartphones and never ever wanted to join the "iclone" or the "massdroids". Sorry 95% of the world but you're "BORING
Thank you Win 8 for not disappointing. With a clean, reliable and super attractive OS that I cant really fault except for some features that I thought should be standard these days (notifications; needing apps for stopwatch, timer & world clocks).
My first smartphone and I dont see a need to jump ship not now not ever.
8.1 should bring us up to parity if not blow the competition away!!!!!!!Last edited by SAM 77; 04-13-2014 at 10:40 PM.

- One year plus on my beloved 920. Its been Ambered, GDR'ed and Blacked.. and, joking aside, it is faster than the day I got it.
When we complain about something, it was well meant to improve on things. We were a more patient lot.
WPC is an exceptional place to come to for my daily reads. Putting in my two cents worth, and the posting the occasional snaps.

- I've been on the windows phone bandwagon since the day 610 came out. Except the basic OS, everything was slow about it. WhatsApp was next to intolerable. There were hardly good apps to be found. Push notifications were a mess. There was no reason to really hang on..But we found love :)
There was something about WP that kept me a fan and a well wisher. Everytime WhatsApp was updated i cheered. When WP7.8 came out I was ecstatic beyond control. I was there cheering on the sidelines all along.
Then the 720 was released. I paid partial cash and traded in my 610 for the 720. To this day i have no regrets. I can still boast that it's the best looking phone after 925 and has a battery life that can at times live up to it's predecessors: the nokia basic phones. Yes it wasn't the best OS out there, buy my my it was fast. The camera could outshoot my friends S3s. The sensitive touch was incredible and has rendered me unable to use a normal keypad phone anymore.
I saw the app market grow steadily and then explode with insane new apps. I saw a demi god in the form of Rudy Huyn who showed the true power of windows phone and caught the attention of multiple parties including nokia and Microsoft. I saw WhatsApp take charge and get their app together. I saw many developers who'd abandoned the platform make a bee line back here. The various GDRs transformed the phone each time into a new phone that i could never get over. By the time the novelty wore off, the next update came in :) i came across amazing people like the ever so patient Laura Knotek and the never say die Microsoft antagonist DJCBS :D
I think WP8.1 will be a new chapter in this love story with this amazing OS. I can hardly wait to get her in my hands :)

- Great work abel920. Personally, I feel that this is not a farewell in the exact sense. Its just "enabling" the core OS to do more and better. I haven't had a smartphone till the Lumia 920 which I still consider to be the most innovative phone produced in recent times. The other models were just upgrades or downgrades to the whole 920 experience. I remember following the live blogs online during Nokia's announcement of the 920 and wished that I would someday earn enough dough to buy one on my own...and I finally could. There are little nags here and there but the phone still stands as king. And what an experience WP 8.0 has been. I knew that although my iDroid friends could do more with their OS, we would somehow be on par someday in the not so distant future and we are ever more closer to that goal and infact, crossing it with 8.1. And this OS provides an experience that is unrivalled. There are (were) many shortcomings and brickbats hurled at MS that they were silent. But I guess all that silence has paid off. Marketshare was never a point of concern for me. I could do all that I wanted with the existing apps - first or third party and be witness to some amazing apps with great UI elements which the other 95% can only dream of. I will be downloading the WP 8.1 Dev Preview when MS flicks the switch later today. I have a strong feeling that with the developments announced at Build 2014, MS is in a very strong position to build a vibrant ecosystem spanning all screen sizes. Its only a matter of time before it happens and I hope that the new "One Microsoft" philosophy initiated by Ballmer and now continuing under Mr. Nadella's leadership really gets to prove its mettle soon. Cheers !!

Beautiful. WP8 on my 1020 has been there for me, we've done so much together, we've gone on so man adventures. But alas, the time of WP8 ends, it's time is up. I will always cherish the good times we've had, that we've shared. From amusement parks with friend, to Hawaii with my family, to San Diego with my swim team, we've done so much together. People try to put my phone down, criticizing the OS it runs, but it endured and persevered, always pressing forward, looking for new adventures, new thrills.
But alas, at long last: the sun sets on Windows Phone 8. But for every sunset, there's always another sunrise, and that comes with WP8.1. I look forward to all the new adventures and experiences I'll share with it. My phone has always been good to me, and it's only going to get better.
But while we all enjoy 8.1 and all the new goodies it brings us: let us reflect upon all the good times we've had with 8. Windows Phone 8: Gone, but not forgotten.
Here's to 8.1, and every decimal thereafter!- Share
