Messed up my Microsoft account

I wanted to install the developer preview and I may have misread the instructions but I thought I was going to receive an email with a link. Since my email address was not active I changed the account alias on my Microsoft account to my current email address, I didn't realize this was a big no no. Does this mean I need to do a reset on my phone in order to use the current account alias because I can't change the account alias back. My phone won't upload to OneDrive so does that mean I can't back it up before I do the reset?
