What would happen if I upgrade my phone to Windows Phone 8.1 and do a hard reset?

Hi,

I got a used Lumia 920 for my girlfriend and I want to upgrade it to Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview.

Can I log into the phone with my Microsoft account and upgrade the phone and later do a hard reset? Will the phone become a brick?

FYI: She does not know that I bought a phone for her, so I cannot log in using her Microsoft account.

Technically it should just work as expected where it will allow you to change accounts once doing a hard reset and keep WP 8.1. However, like others, I used to have a 920 and if I did a hard reset, it would sometimes do the spinning gears forever. I had to flash the current firmware to recover. However, I didn't always have the problem and I tried on another phone and that never had the problem.

He would need to log in with a 'developer' account to install WP 8.1 and then a hard reset would be required to change accounts.

I updated my HTC 8XT to 8.1 and went through 4 hard resets to get everything working right. One of those hard resets wiped my carrier settings. That was the only one I did via the settings menu. The others were done via HTCs hardware key combo, but even the carrier settings came back. YMMV.
