XAP to APPX?

When did this happen? I thought we pretty much had XAP as the final format? Now when I searched, I learnt that the new format of apps is going to be APPX ??

Will the SDK read APPX for me to deploy it?

WP8.1 runs the same kind of apps like W8. Therefore WinRT, so APPX. You can still use XAP, by building Silverlight apps
