No automatic app updates

I've been having this problem since 8.1 PfD, that is even when I turn the auto updates on they don't work. I have to force check for any app updates. I tried turning it on and off and it had used to fix it - for a time. Any ideas?

Either you may have a problem with the updates or you will find that we check or come across app updates news from or favourite sites or feeds and know about the update long before its push out to our phones and it may seem that the auto updates don't work !

Like I said in the past turning them off and on helped, i.e. I was getting updates for sometimes, but then it stopped. Now this doesn't work at all.
