How to disable tap to expand ribbon during a call?

Is there a way to keep the call screen (with the "Speaker, Mute and End Call" buttons) open while i'm in a call? After placing the phone on your ear for a couple seconds, the call screen minimizes to a ribbon at the top of the screen alerting you to "tap to expand" in order to get back to the call screen. This makes, hanging up on a call very cumbersome.

Are you sure you are not hitting the back button or home buttons?

That's the only way to minimize the Phone App during a call.
