VLC app won't play music in the background

I installed the VLC app from the windows store on my computer at work running Windows 8.1. The app is great for playing music (compared to the XBOX Music App), but when I minimize it or switch to another window, the music stops playing (unlike the XBOX Music app, which will keep playing music in the background). I can't find any settings to change this. Is the app just not able to play music in the background? Thanks

I managed to play background audio. I didn't simply open the file using vlc but first I opened the vlc app on the menu and then I opened the audio file with vlc and the music didn't stop when switching to another app.
