New user, coming from android

Hey all,
My first post and I have a few questions.
I'm using an HTC 8xt and it appears to be stuck on 8.1 for the rest of it's life. Since win10 is right around the corner for everyone else, how will that affect my app store? As in, when I see an app now that says it has been updated recently does that mean it's being updated for win10 functionality but not 8.1 functionality?
Is it safe to assume that my apps are functioning the best they're ever going to and that any bug fixes are going to apply only to the apps as they would function on win10?
Anybody got a link to a collection of apps that work great on 8.1? I'd like to try some new apps to get the "windows phone" experience but can't seem to find any that work very well and or have been updated recently.

It will let you know if it's compatible with 8.1. If it doesn't give an option to download then it won't work. If it'll let you download then it'll work on your phone. I recommend fantasia painter. It's the best photo editing app ever In my opinion.
