On a side note, does anybody know how to start a dynastic marriage? The game's help doesn't actually tell you what buttons to hit, and I've explored my palace and other players' looking for an answer to no avail.

Thanks, I'm already in a alliance! For the marriage, click on the Palace, go to Family Tree and select a member of the Imperial Family which is 16 or more and not already married. You have to choose another player (e.g. a member of your alliance) and select a member of his Family. You cannot marry the people in the Court.

Does it take some time for these family members to appear? I currently only have the starting two characters, then I can click First generation there is another man and woman married with a child, then there is a second generation button with only a 2 year old child.

I assume when these children grow to 16 I will see a "Marry" option?

Yep, you have to wait a week or more for the child growth.
