How many MP does the average shooter need?

I look at device specifics and I think a device fits all my needs but then I see it only has a 5 MP camera and I think about all the higher MP devices and think this phone must be lacking. If all I do is take pictures of my cats doing cute things that I share with friends on Facebook, do I really need the highest MP and cutting edge technology? But on the flip side I don't want crap either (I want my kitties to look their best). What do I NEED? Want is another story.

It all depends on what you are doing with the pictures. If you plan to print large images, more MP are a good idea. However, if you're just posting compressed images on a website, more MPs won't make much of a difference.
