Same with me. After the .218 I did a hard reset and I am back to the Samsung settings. Now I am on the production ring, which I don't mind because I don't want to be on the fast ring.
BTW: the black screen bug seems to be gone (4 days on .218).

Does anyone know what's the difference between the update procedure during live upgrade and update procedure executed during the reset?

I mean it is quite obvious that a simple update from one build to another isn't enough. For example some system apps might not get correctly updated during the update procedure where resetting the phone almost by 100% is a solution.

I thought Windows uses DISM in both cases, isn't it?

I don't feel this is rightfully so.

I've enrolled into Windows Insider program only once when the phone was on Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2.

After that I underwent 3 updates (10586.107->.164 (soft reset) ->.218 (no reset), and i didn't do anything with my enrolment to run these updates. I haven't run Windows Insider anymore after upgrading once from 8.1 to 10.

All updates to Windows 10 the phone received without me needing to play with enrollment into Windows Insider program.

Yes, I believe you're correct. I haven't been enrolled in the program since 8.1 update 2 either. So, am I to understand that you updated from 8.1 update 2 to 10586.107 without first updating to 10586.29?

Were you able to backup to the cloud before doing a hard reset? If so, were you able to restore your apps and settings?

Just finishedthe rollback from 14233 to 8.1 update 1 then all the way to 10586.218

However it's sad that I find after I reset and restored everything from my previous setting (14295.1004), I still couldn't add input method for other language in 10586.218.....I can't believe after these much versions MSFT still can fail on this simple thing....

And yet this just a prefect DEMO of how terrible the restore system MSFT provide. I got everything settled in my previous working backup, I have 3 input method in two languages and just the US english in my list now. I have my scale down to 150% and my tiles are sitting well in a 4-column layup, the backup just reload all my tiles - in a 3-column layup. Am I supposed to be happy that this in not my daily phone and just limited apps/tiles were there so there's not much work to do? I'm getting tired of this half-baked BS...:(

But I have to say that going production ring to build 218 I can feel the performance and soomthness are better than any build I've tried before. I guess I'll leave my device as my bed time reader...

######UPDATED######
After received an update last night the keyboard language back to life. I can enjoy build 218 now.

I totally agree. 218 is the best windows 10 Build ever! I run OS Benchmark before:
Windows Phone 8.1 Update: 473
Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2: 454

Windows 10 Mobile TH2 107: 303
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 218: 504
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 318: 483 (best battery life)
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 456: 535
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 545: 454
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 589: 495
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 633: 521(fixed battery drain?)
Windows 10 Mobile TH2 713: 512

Windows 10 Mobile RS1 103: 493
Windows 10 Mobile RS1 189: 498

Windows 10 Mobile RS2 14965: 541 (Graphics improvements)

This is the overall score from OS Benchmark 2.

If I am not mistaken, after you enroll into Windows Insider program, the phone installs two updates in a row: .107 and .164.

But maybe these are 29 and 107, I can't say for sure.

There is one thing that is causing me some trepidation. According to MS website, Windows 10 Mobile updates are automatic. Once I commit to 10, is there a way to prevent MS from downloading Redstone? Or do I have to worry about that?

Hi Dave,
In fact, when you are in Wp 8.1, the WIndows Insider app has 2 choices if you subscribe: Insider Slow and Insider Fast.

When you update your mobile to WM 10.10586, your Windows Insider app will evoluate with another choice: Production.
In WM10.10586, you have to subscribe on more time to the ring you want to go on. At this moment, if you choose Production ring, you'll stay in 10.10586 while if you choose Insider Fast ring, you'll upgarde to Redstone.
That's it ;)

Thanks for your support Skyjouby. Since I've set all the registry settings back to their defaults, Insider doesn't have any builds for the ativ s. However, the Update Advisor app shows that my phone can download .29 and Windows update keeps nagging me to do so. From what I've read, .218 seems to be working pretty well. Do you concur? Cheers!

Hi Dave, sorry for the delay...
In fact, I cannot help you more about 10.10586, as I am in Redstone for a moment...

Redstone is really not recommended so I must go back to 10/10586, but I have no time to to it for the moment :/

Hope you have stil found the answer!

Yes, and I think the reason Redstone doesn't work well on the ativ s is because it caters to newer phones like the Nokia 950 XL. Good luck returning to 10586.

How did you updated on Redstone? I read Ativ S and Lumia x20 are in bootloop with this update

14291/14295 is the working redstone build for ATIV S.

However they are not as stable and smooth as 10586.218 and I'm not seeing any new feature on my ATIV S. I'm actually happy that the bootloop issue leads me into a better build :) and I do think there's not much surprise (functionally/performancely) for WP8/8.1 era device in the future so .218 is a good choice to stay with.

Hi Tien, did you by chance flash to this rom: forum.xda-developers.com/windows-phone-8/development/rom-custom-spvrom-t3319771 from 2424.15.3.2?

Hi Dave,

I'm watching their progress and waiting if there's chance for more known issue fixed like default camera focus problem, vibration then I'd be happy to give a try.

Currently I'm planning to stay with 218 for a longer time see how it goes and take a look of how UWP doing, I installed Vine today and it crashed right after I press it.....
