I am a professional software developer, but not a specialist in mobile or networking. I really would like to have an app on WP that can get the pollen and allergy information from pollen.com (including displaying the pollen level on the live tile) I am confident that I can code the app if I can get access to the API to know what data to send. I have searched the pollen.com website to no avail, and contacting them has also led to no response. I am therefore looking to reverse-engineer the API by looking at what the mobile website and iPad apps send and receive. This may be legally a gray area, but I would give away any resulting app (no ads or marketplace fee) so I would, at least, not be profiting from this (other than knowing how sick I am going to be on a given day)

I have never reverse-engineered a web API before, and I am not familiar with what tools would be best to use. Obviously it would be some kind of packet sniffer to see the incoming and outgoing data, but I am not familiar with any of the options, and I have heard that some of the more popular ones might be nefarious in sending out your packets to third-parties as well, so I am leery of installing any without some kind of recommendation.

I'd love some advice from more experienced WP hackers on the best way to get started in my reverse-engineering.

I use fiddler. It's very easy to use.

I just downloaded fiddler and it looks perfect. Easy to set up as a proxy server for the iPad as well so I can see what the official app sends and receives. Thanks!
