3D picture technology

I read an article recently about Microsoft developing 3D pictures by flipping the infrared filter. Admittedly, I have very little idea about how that works, but the possibilities intrigue me.

I think it's one of those things like a e-wallet that could change the way we live. All you have to do is add 3D printing to it. Imagine; you're out and you see something you'd like to have or think you could use, you load your maker app, take a few pictures of it, upload the file to the cloud for cleaning (of which Microsoft already acquired the best service available), and your connected printer at home begins to make that thing for you so it's waiting for you when you get home.

Another use could be in re-creating 360 degree scenes for VR headsets, where true depth readings, I would think, would make creating a real-world scene much easier.

Any other uses for 3D picture taking capabilities?
