Tried out the new TP update and it was ok but not good enough for daily use. Tried to restore 8.1 with the recovery tool. It failed leaving me with a black screen but my computer kept making the USB connect/disconnect noise with a device in device manager called QHSUSB_DLOAD that is missing drivers. Tried rebooting with the power + vol down but it isn't working. Is my phone toast?

Nope, the recovery tool doesn't detect it and the phone screen doesn't show anything. Also pried off the back cover and disconnected the battery to ensure it was off but it didn't come back on after that.

This happened with other people during the 8.1 dev preview. Most of them got it fixed by contacting Nokia and sending it off. It doesn't look like there's any other way :(. Try contacting Microsoft support and see what they say. They might be able to help you out :)

What if our phone's out of warranty?

I'm on the same boat as you with my 920. It was a cracked, secondary device that I used for testing, but it was still nice to have. I guess it's as good as gone now.

Hmm. I'm not sure. It might be work talking to them and seeing what they say. The other option would be to wait and see if MS come up with a fix for it. It seems to be happening with quite a few people :(

It's probably not completely dead. That's hard to achieve. Microsoft probably thought about this situation before you and there probably is a way back. Thought, it probably ain't easy.

First try a hard reset with the button combination. From what I understood that probably won't work, but why not try it. Who knows.

If that doesn't work, try the Lumia Software Recovery Tool.
Plug your phone in, and if it doesn't get detected, or starts acting weird, click the 'Phone not detected' button.

If it's no use, try a local repairshop or a Nokia Care center.
