Android emoticons not coming through

I just figured out my girlfriend has been texting me hearts that were showing up as question marks on my end. Getting an "I love you?" has kind of a different meaning than was intended, LOL.

Anyway, she is just using the default keyboard and can receive emoticons that I send. Any idea what is going on? I thought these were more or less a standard.

Are you talking about SMS? Try out the Hangouts app for SMS, maybe it works then.
