Android killed windows phone (mobile) not apple

yeah, it is the fault of everybody else but not Microsoft.
it happens to many companies to fail and thrive. Microsoft at that time was having the steve ballmer and he was not a very good ceo. i think that if he was continuing to be the ceo of microsoft then microsoft was falling to bankruptcy. luckely naidela came and changed everything, the microfost shares begun to rise and the company seems to be continuing to be successful.
hope that microsoft with its continuum project and the unification of the mobile and desktop OSes will bring it again to the competitive market.

Agreed with vitaliesolomon - Ballmer didn't understand what was needed and was too monofocused on Expee as the cash cow.

Also, changing from 6.5 to 7 to 8 to 10 didn't help. I can still pickup my 3g T-Mobile phone running Eclair and it will work with Google Play.

Isn't blaming anyone besides Microsoft for the state of Windows Mobile akin to saying that it's the Patriots' fault that the Falcons lost the Super Bowl?

May the best man win!

There's no doubt Microsoft's waffling killed any chance for the platform to assert itself in the marketplace. The decision to abruptly end WinCE could not have come at a worse time especially when the new wave of Mango devices were hitting the shelves along with the Lumia line. There was even an active userbase on XDA hacking and Interop Unlocking and so forth. Anybody remember Chevron tokens? All of that came to a screeching halt when the Lumias and their locked bootloaders hit the scene.

Speaking of which, the diehard Lumia fanboys also have blood on their hands. WinPho 7.5 had LG, Samsung, Dell and HTC all onboard and were the driving force behind the rise of WP7. This cult-like worship of Nokia-or-bust did NOT help and in fact, hurt sales. HTC had only one WP8 device (One M8) and it was a stellar one but nooooo, it sucked because it wasn't a Lumia. Samsung had the God-awful Odyssey and the Ativ series which were very good at the time of their respective releases but nooooo, they were inferior to the Lumias as well. Outside of the 1520 and Icon/930 not One. Single. Lumia. could hold a candle to any of those top-flight phones. Blame carrier exclusivity all you like but the Icon was a Verizon exclusive like the Ativ SE and the 1520 was an AT&T exclusive also in the US. The One M8 was on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, but nooooo.

Samsung and HTC bailed, Nokia was disemboweled and all we were left with were the 640 as the flag carrying device. The 650 was marginally better in terms of software since it shipped with W10M, The first Alcatel (Fierce XL) was a horrible device and the 950s simply didn't stand a chance. I expect plenty of grief but how many here bought an Acer Primo, Idol 4S or HP x3? Frankly, I'm surprised Alcatel, Acer or HP even bothered given the consumer apathy for any OEM not born in Finland.

Acer has not released another mobile so we know how they might feel. IF Alcatel comes with one more (depending on what Microsofts real plans are going to be...) then we have to hope they keep getting better at what they are doing. The IDOL 4s has got them a lot of attention. HP we know is buddy buddy with Microsoft right now, but the mobile device(s) they have are not as consumer friendly. I love a good Lumia, but there is something about using and supporing another player for the cause...

If that attitude would've existed in 2012 this theme would probably not exist. I love me a good Lumia too, but are there finer looking handsets than the M8 or Dell Venue Pro? I still consider the DVP as the most beautiful phone design ever.

Ya! Where is Dell in all this?

I read the whole article, thanks. It is another journalist's hind site in my opinion. Not really worth much since they are not in the trenches with any of those companies. Good insight though. It's much more than I could share about the topic of course. However it seems more biased against Microsoft as if they felt personally affected by Microsoft's mobile ambitions. Taking it personally. Sharing as if Microsoft failed miserably and is dead. The only way we learn is from our mistakes. Execution the first time around is hard. Maybe they have a much more solid foundation this time around. I believe they do. However there is more than meets the eye though when it comes to deciphering what and why. Microsoft has not lost any momentum despite all the negative past/history they have had with mobile and their operating systems. To me that says more than that article just in itself. The fact that Microsoft keeps moving forward (updates/rumors of new HW/etc..) tells me they have not been killed yet. Thanks for sharing this.

That was my first entrance onto Windows Phone after my disillusionment with Android. It had a brilliant screen, if a bit too small for my large fingers, great button placement, wonderful speakers, all metal body, fast processor and a sd card..

The main issue was the absolutely horrible camera and WP8.0. I eventually upgraded it to WM10 until they cutoff support.

HTC had the 8x too...
