Any way to know net status ?

I generally have 2g or 3g activated on my 820 but many a times I am unable to know if the network is still working because even if the status displays 3G...there is no way for us to know if I have been connected...i have to go to bing and make a search to kmow if i am connected !!
we do not have incomming and outgoing data arrows like in other Os...is there any app to help us ??
