Well, the iPhone could very seriously bankrupt Sprint, so it'll probably take some sort of crisis like that for the carriers to stop kowtowing to Apple.

Eh, I disagree.

The carriers never do anything good with their power. They complain they don't just want to be "dumb pipes".

Well what do carriers do when they get a little control?

They come up with crap software designed to try to get people to pay for things they do (or should) get for free, like their bogus navigation software for $10 a month. They come up with junk apps that they make it impossible to delete from the phone with out hacking it (this is what we get from Android rolling over to carriers every whim). They abuse customers by trying to undermine the unlimited data plans they PAID for.

Basically, the carriers do nothing good that anyone wants, except subsidize the phones and act as a dumb pipe. That's all anyone wants from them. Anything they invent is pure crap, whether it's software or money making schemes. More often than not, they just get in the way.

I understand it's a popular pastime to blindly hate Apple, but one thing you can THANK Apple for, is setting a precedent by telling carriers to go screw themselves when it came to packing the phone up with bloatware. The fact that Apple took a stand on that is the reason why Windows Phone doesn't have any bloatware now (or very little, and whatever is there you can freely delete with no problem)

Carriers suck. That is the bottom line. They are a necessary evil, but no one in their right mind actually likes them and we sure as **** should not want them to have any more than the absolute bare minimum amount of power.

More competition in the smartphone world is a good thing for the consumer. I'd love to see BlackBerry keep it's head above water, see Windows Phone grow and blossom, and have Apple and Android continue to do well. All good. But screw the damn carriers. They need to be dumb pipes and stay out of the way.

In a perfect world, they would be. You'd be able to buy whatever phone you want and use it on whatever carrier you want and if you didn't get satisfactory service, switch carriers the next month with no penalty. That's how it should be. You can be sure, prices would go way down and customer service would be amazing. It would more than make up for the $200 subsidy on your phone.

So, no, giving AT&T more power at the expense of Apple is not a good thing. Apple makes good stuff. AT&T does not. No carrier does.

They should act like any other utility. I don't want my city water provider to start offering me different flavors of tap water or protection plans for my faucets. I don't want them trying to modify my shower and sell me shampoo deliver services for $39.99 a month. I just want them to deliver the damn water, make sure it's clean and plentiful and then stay the **** out of my way.

Charging for text messaging that costs them next to nothing. There's absolutely no reason for it. None!

The majority of my adult life, I've had 2 jobs: I've worked in entertainment and I've worked in telecom, the latter in which I have 10+ years. I worked mainly in wireline before going to wireless. Problem with your above paragraph is wireless isn't a true utility nor is cable or satellite. Why? Lack of regulation. Basically, that gives them the right to do whatever they d@mn well please. Why else are you paying anywhere from 9-17% in taxes and surcharges? Cause anything they are told they have to pay for, they pass it right along to the customer. Oh, I can tell you some stories about the charges on your bills that are just robbery. The biggest of which was that USF fund. What a crock that turned out to be.

Anyways, I'm with you on your thought process. Problem is that in this scenario, which Devil do you give the control to? Apple or the carrier?
