According to the BBC, Nokia have sent a letter to a London Tech StartUp to cease using the name HERE in their new app.

A big issue I see with this, is if it gets dragged out it's possible some tech/news sites that are more MS-hating will try to pass Nokia as being a MS company... And you know how easy it is for the sheep to follow...

Well if someone can't see the validity of the argument then they're idiots. I can see where Nokia is coming from and the other company doing a whine about it makes them look pitiful. HERE is an international brand, like Coke or any other large brand. Lots of money has been spent on promoting it.

As for the sad dig at the mapping service says all you need to know about the other company. They obviously don't know what they were talking about.

That dig made me cross, especially referencing the pile of crap that is apple maps (pretty sure no one has ever driven into a lake/river using HERE unlike Apple).

HERE has taken me down some very questionable 'roads' but never via a river or in a case I remember; straight across a busy airport's runway! LOL

I never knew 2 million downloads on android meant nobody uses it...

Here Maps has 1 million of downloads in Play Store. The active users are a fraction of that. How many of them are Finns?

Not true. You probably don't know this but Nokia licence their mapping data to every large company that produces digital maps. Apple use it, Google use it, Bing uses it, GPS navigators use it.

Anywhere you see the word Navteq on a digital map then you are seeing Nokia.

I'm one of those. I downloaded it on Android but I don't use it. Don't get me wrong: it's great, but it's not better than Google Maps. On an Android Google Maps is default, which makes it the most convenient to use.

Edit: to add to this, I do use HERE Maps on my WP. It's just that on any platform the default map is the most convenient. And they're close enough to being equal that's the difference isn't worth using a non-native map.

Nokia doesn't need any press, since their maps are the best anyway, since they own Navteq whose maps are used by Garmin and every other major GPS brand.
Maybe HERE does not have the services at the same level as some others, but the maps are flawless.
