So, I looked at my bank account today. I noticed an item from AT&T with an amount of $106.24. The payment also mentioned 11/07 (the day I preordered) so I'm pretty sure it's the 920 order. The question is:

Why is it $106.24 ($99.99 * (1 + 6.25% MA sales tax))?

Shouldn't I pay tax on the full price? And should there be an activation fee? My order confirmation said:

So I am very confused now, although I'm happy that I got an discount. Any thoughts?

Activation. Fee will show on your next bill

When I bought my first phone I was definitely charged tax on the full $450. I returned it an bought a cyan on in tax free NH though 😉

The amount charged by AT&T is correct $106.24. Tax is calculated on sale price after discount. You would have paid tax on the full price had it been a mail in rebate or some other special circumstances. Activation fee is always charged to your next bill.

Not true for all states. States like California and Nevada will charge tax based on full price of phone no matter what.

Thanks, everybody. Now I'm a little pissed that last year I paid tax on full retail price for my iPhone 4S but I'm happy that this time I got this 'discount'.
