I recently bought the Nokia Lumia 820 phone. I was quite pleased with it.
There is a problem with my battery though.

It runs out very fast, It goes down about 1% every minute and on games it goes down even faster.
The shop where I bought it from agreed it was faulty and have given me a new Lumia 820.

When I get the phone, as soon as I get it do I leave it to charge until it reaches 100% (I did this on the phone I returned), or do I leave it charging for 24 hours?

Well it takes some time for the battery to start giving you a good performance. I used to let the battery drain out completely and then recharge it 100% after a few times it got a good start.

Also there are a lot of background apps that eat up the battery.

Settings-Applications-Background Tasks. (Click on the applications you don't need and block them)

Then I don't use xbox games etc so just go to games and turn it off.

Go onto Music and Videos in the Applications itself and turn the "Connect with Xbox Music" and "Xbox Music Cloud Collection" off, they hog a lot of power too.

I also have 'tap+send' off and bluetooth off. So is kid's corner and location too (I don't require them, if you do then leave them on).

My Brightness is on low, works fine for me at least. I like my phone to be easy on the eyes.

You can switch the backup to manual if you want, that saves battery too.

When I performed all of the above mentioned , my battery started to give me a day and a half easily. So, try it out. Also depends on your usage of mail, phone, messaging, especially whatsapp.

Hope it helps!

Hey Dv, welcome to WPCentral. Unfortunately, it seems to be a recurring theme that our batteries are not calibrating properly (at least with the 920) and this is reducing our battery life. Other things you can try though...
  • Completely discharge your phone then recharge it fully until it reaches 100%
  • Disable background tasks for apps that you don't need running in the background (for example I have all apps except for Battery Tile and AccuWeather disabled, as those 2 update my lockscreen every half hour with the latest info)
  • Turn off services such as Tap+Send, Bluetooth, et al, that you do not use

Hopefully your battery improves soon

Tap and Send is off, WiFi is off, Brightness is low, all apps are closed, no background tasks are running, backup is on manual too and I still have the problem.

Yeah, so give it sometime. I clearly remember when I bought my iPhone 4 for the first week or so the battery would drain out, but then it started performing well. Guess, it happens with every new phone. Don't worry, you'll be fine :)
